Wauks’ Gadgets: Macbook

This is the second installment of my personal gadgets post series which kicked off with my review of the iPod Nano 8GB (3rd Gen). Today I’ll talk about the Macbook which I recently purchased two-three weeks ago. It’s one of the best gadgets I’ve ever bought and I really have no regrets despite spending so much on the damn thing.

I’m not sure if I can give justice to the Macbook in just one post so I’ll try to focus first on the reasons why I got the Macbook followed by my initial experience compared to what I’m used to with Windows.

I bought the Macbook for several reasons - and the first one is that it looks really good with my coffee in starbucks (LOL). Seriously though, Apple really did an excellent job of associating the Mac brand with “coolness”. There’s always an aspirational feel to any of their products since it’s more lifestyle than tech.

And that’s exactly what I found out when I first tried using the Macbook. It’s so user friendly! You don’t need to install anything and you can LITERALLY USE IT once you take it out of the box! No set-up hassle like downloading drivers and programs just to make sure your PC works. The Macbook is made for people who are not “techies”. It’s so easy to figure out and it took me less than 2 hours to get used to the user interface.

Product Information:
MB061 MacBook 13″ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo White
1GB/80GB/Combo/APX/BT/iSight
PHP 60,000

Anyway, going back to the reason why I got a Macbook, it’s also really nice to use as a presentation laptop. Other than my work for Level Up, I also put up a consultancy company with a few friends for politicians. The Macbook serves as my “sideline/racket” laptop while my company PC is for Level Up work. To those who are afraid of not running programs with Windows, you can actually reboot the Mac and use Windows as your OS! This is a really good breakthrough that will allow a lot of gamers to run Ragnarok and other Windows Only programs on their Macbook. The video card and the processor is okay so you can actually run World of Warcraft at medium settings with no problem. You can probably run RF and Perfect World really well.

What I hate about the Macbook
If there’s one thing I hate about the Macbook is how insane the prices are for the accessories. The KeyBoard protector alone cost me 1,200 bucks and I’ve yet to get the leather case protector which will cost an additional 2,800. I have no plans of getting the Apple branded Mouse because it costs more than 4,000! Imagine… 4,000 FOR A MOUSE!? You can easily get a good mouse for 300 bucks at PC Express.

While there are so many accessories available for the Macbook, it’s just to expensive for the average Filipino consumer. Like the iPod Nano 3rd Gen, this is just a nice-to-have and not really an essential gadget in your day-to-day life. It’s still more logical to invest in a normal laptop or desktop for around 25,000-40,000 compared to buying a Macbook which will cost more than 60,000.

For my next Gadgets related post, I’ll try to talk about the funcitonal benefits of the Macbook. ‘Till then, cheers everyone!

First of all bucks =/= peso.. SO don’t confuse us by referring to pesos as bucks.. <_<
Secondly, coolness is a mere justification for people who bought a piece of overpriced hardware.

The Mac’s claim to fame is it’s really more user-friendly than the normal Windows-run PC. Plus it’s less virus-prone as well. Great investment :)

Apple’s got a new laptop called Macbook Air. It’s really cool cause it very thin that it can actually fit in a envelope. I saw it by my own eyes. I even got to test out the laptop. Check out Apple.com for further information.

MacBook = Great Investment? 60k laptop with specs of a 40k laptop. LOL.

My brother has a macbook pro which he bought at 98k, I got a twinhead stylebook 12D laptop, fully upgraded, spent a total of 75k and this baby can rock better than his apple top. bad investment, you just paid additional 20k for the brand name

  19. Butch Tantoco Says:

The cool thing about the MacBook is that Viruses and spywares cannot penetrate the O.S of a Macintosh. Although you don’t have the applications to run Windows, ubuntu or stuff, you would be able to by buying or downloading Parallels desktop via Bootcamp, but I must warn you you the performance of your Mac would be slower than usual. But why would you want to run crappy windows now that you’re using a Mac? Try searching for the MESH File, it is a file designed by Apple that allows you to run any application like .exe, .WinRar/MacRar and so much more that most computers would be needing. You would be able to play DOTA. I’ve tried doing that and works fine for me. No lag or whatsoever. Enjoy your Mac!

  20. Butch Tantoco Says:

Apple just came out with the improved version of the MacBook. 2.4 Ghz., 250 GB of storage and an 802.11 Wi-fi Airport. Omg!

  21. Gabie Says:

Chief, MacBooks rock indeed. I have one too :D

You can get a program called Parallels Desktop which allows you to run Windows right inside Mac OS X. Para tipid na sa paggawa ng partition XD
