Valhalla: No PK Free-to-Play Server

A few hours ago, the official announcement about Thor was finally posted on the Ragnarok Website. Before I delve into the specifics of the new server, I’ll share with everyone the story behind this latest development. For several months now, Thor’s numbers have dwindled, going down to an average of 35-45 players. This is mainly because of two things - Valkyrie Server and the unsolved bot problem which has plagued the server for the past year. It reached a point wherein the operating expense of Thor was really high versus the numbers it brings in. A lot of managers here were pushing that we just close down Thor and start a new server from scratch. The RO Team did their best to convince them to maintain Thor and just reduce operating costs but it wasn’t just feasible. Instead of shutting down the server, the team proposed that the Thorians would be migrated with their current characters and some of their equipment. Remaining game time would be converted into Rok Points. And thus, Valhalla, the newest free-to-play server of Philippine Ragnarok Online, was born.

Thorians! The god of thunder, Thor, has begun his ascent back to Valhalla… and he has chosen you to join him in this journey to greatness. Leave this world of mortals and embrace a new land of opportunity and power!

We are pleased to inform everyone that we will be launching VALHALLA, the latest transformation of Thor and Ragnarok’s newest FREE-TO-PLAY SERVER, on NOVEMBER 30, 2007! Valhalla will be a server with the same settings as Valkyrie except that the PK feature will no longer be enabled. We will be announcing unique features to Valhalla in the coming days so stay tuned for further announcements about Philippine Ragnarok Online’s latest server.

As stated earlier, there will be a Thor Migration into Valhalla! On November 28, 2007, the Thor Server will be closed. All of your characters will be migrated into the new Valhalla server which will open on November 30, 2007. Characters moved this way will KEEP their current levels and any items their character/s is carrying in their inventory. Please note that characters can only bring items that they are carrying into Valhalla. Any items stored in Kafra Storages and Merchant Carts will NOT be transferred.

Please also note that all accounts that have at least one (1) Level 70 Character in Thor and has logged in at least once in Thor ever since October 28, 2007 will have all their remaining game time converted into Rok Points that they can use to buy items from any server.

We advise all Thorians to start making the necessary preparations for the journey to Valhalla.

On November 30, we enter the Immortal Hall of Warriors!

Valhalla, like Valkyrie, will be included in the roster of servers for the Ragnarok Philippine Championships 2008. To end this post, I’d like to apologize to all the Thor players. I know that you guys wanted something other than this, but the team really did their best. The only thing we can really do for you guys is to at least give you what we can - your characters and the conversion of your game time into Rok Points.

Valhalla server settings will NOT be 100% the same as Valkyrie. Stay tuned for updates in the coming days.

  2. I’d like to ask another question, will zenny be retained after the transfer? It only stated items/equips that the character has in their inventory will be transferred.

    That would be all until the next release of info will be present. Still the name Valhalla doesn’t get my attention, just to point out. Hayz, 2 servers to patrol and report against bots. /heh

    Rachel Sanctuary donations were done as a team by Thor players. Is there any chance Valhalla will have the Rachel Sanctuary open as soon as the server starts? Just like in Valkyrie, the Sanctuary was opened in the first week. There’s no possible way for that to happen unless someone spent an extreme amounts of money to sell sphere packs and then donated it all. /swt

  6. Hmm, I’m not sure about that. I think that’s what happened to Valkyrie (Sphere Packs Galore).


  7. Are there no other incentives for the load the Thorians have spent for all these years? I find this really unfair, and the fact that you shoved this decision to us out of the blue.

    How come you can’t transfer items from the Kafra when you did so back in Freya, Tyr and Baldur?. The Thorians could’ve let this pass if you included the merchant’s cart as a method to save our hard-earned manually acquired loots.

    And is there an already concrete defense against bots with the coming of Valhalla?, because one of our main reasons of staying with Thor is with the Original Ragnarok settings and the almost miniscule presence of bots.

  9. What about the registration fee we suggested to at least minimize botting? Did you bring that up in your dialogues? Botters will think twice before they try to bot in Valhalla if they get to lose their money. Please reconsider this suggestion for the betterment of the new server. Also, a registration fee will not only prevent botting but will also give LU a sure fire income from the server’s first days of operation. I am an avid RB’er, and from what I read these past few months, the people are not against a registration fee, in fact, they want it! They want it because they know the purpose of the registration fee is to hamper the botters by making them lose something if ever they try to do something illegal. So once again, please reconsider this suggestion, the people are not against it.

  21. Why was there no consultation with the Thor community? I recall you mentioning that if there would be changes to the server, a server consultation would be done…apparently none was made and this decision was just handed down. I think that this decision is unfair to the players of Thor. And why are the kafra and cart items not included? It was done during the server merge, why can’t it be done here?


  22. Wauks, I respect you. By stating my comment, I mean no offense to you.

    This decision has been the crappiest. The two main reasons why Thor deteriorated are due to LU’s faults. This sucks.

    And as Van Horn said, no consultation was done. I had hoped that we would have had a say in the matter. I’m very disappointed with this, and so are a lot of Thorians.

    Sadly, this is the end of the line for me with LU.

    super liit na ng kinikita ng levelup sa thor kahit dati pa tpawo ngaun nalulugi na anu masgusto niyo shutdown thor pati delete lahat ng characters (which i’m afraid na mangyari sa urdr) or gawin siyang f2p server???


  26. ohhh dagdag k pa onting consideration naam nsana para dun sa mga thor palyers ^^ even thoguh 4 k lang tao sa valk hirap pa rin makalogin pati lgi dc dhl sa sobrang dami ng bots. don’t you thionk kung dalawang server at least gagaan ng onti yung load sa servers kaya kahit maramign anglologin na bots na di makapasok at least makakapaglaro tau parehas ^^

I hate this game now … lahat ng oras na pinag hirapan ko sa thor para makakuha ng items cards, at perang pinangbili ko ng items ay maglalaho ng parang bula dahil sa migration na ito. ang masama pa na ban ang aking acount dahil ng afk mode lang ako sa pront dun sa valk at bot na daw ako kaya di ko na tuloy maayos account ko sa thor. talagng walang hiya ginawa ng kumpanya na ito sir wauks. kung mabuti kang tao umalis ka na sa kumpanyang ito o katulad ka din nila.

    Is there any chance that you could remove the no tele/bwing and -5% penalty from the settings of valhalla?

    Do you think 1 week preparation is enough for LU to implement all this new settings? well we all know how often LU screws things during big changes like this.

    Please do not impose on Valhalla the same settings na ginawa ninyo sa Valkyrie.

    Inalis ninyo tele/bwing at flywing para di magkabots, pero ang nangyari napuno pa rin ng bots ang Valk. Ang tanging nahirapan lamang dito ay ang mga players. Huwag sana ninyong alisin ang skill at items na ito sa Valhalla.

    There is also the -5% penalty. Huwag sana ninyong i-implement ito sa Valhalla.

    Sana ay may paraan din kayo para mapigilan ang paglusob ng mga bots sa Valhalla. The things you are doing for Valkyrie is not helping.
    your anti-bot there made the manual players suffer a lot of dc.

    Half of Thor’s population are quitting RO. The other half like us are hoping that Valhalla won’t be like Valkyrie.

    Sana sabihin ninyo ang paraang gagawin ninyo to prevent bots from infesting and ruining Valhalla.We are willing to help LU get rid of bots in Valhalla. But we need your total support.

    But how about allowing other players from the commercial servers to migrate to Valhalla? Pero siyempre may limit ang pera at gamit na pwede nilang madala.

    About the 3 character slot “said” in the Valkyrie settings, they’re currently 9 character slots due to some technical difficulties in reducing it to 3. So basically, the 9 character slot in Valkyrie was left alone.

  46. Both f2p and p2p are valid ways to publish a game. But LU greatest mistake was to introduce cash items on subscription-based servers.

    When I read in this blog that russian RO had cash items it surprised me a lot. But then, reading through their site, I saw they made the move correctly: abolishing game access fees when launching cash items. Something LU got right just now, with Valkyrie.

    Free to play has its advantages. It’s very good for people that don’t have the guts to compete (read: time). So when they play they can afford lots of helpful items to have fun and, indeed, these casual players are the ones that mantain (read: money) the server. It’s also the perfect option for the ones that want to play but can’t afford it, usually going to illegal private servers. These people are important too, because even not spending a dime, a good MMORPG must have a lot of real people to interact with. And a final plus, the trial account burden isn’t necessary anymore.

    But free to play isn’t perfect. There is a resonable ammount of people that dislike buying items because they feel somehow it’s nicer to get through the game themselves. It’s an accomplishment thing, hard to explain to the ones that don’t have the feeling. These people gladly pay subscription, but don’t accept the idea of cash items, botting or any kind of cheating. This category of players was forgotten by LU - or at least that’s how I felt before I left.

    Thor is closing. Fine, everything comes to an end someday - getting angry or sad won’t help. But it’s a good time for LU to stop and think *why* the server failed. Remember that most people don’t come around to say goodbye when they dislike a service, so please don’t be naive to believe what botters say that no server survives without them. They will always be lurking around, but not the real players.

  49. Pano po yun URDR!!! 300 na lamang ang tao doon… sana free to play na rin…o imerge na lamang sa valkyrie or valhalla server.. Baka sa pagtagal magaya sitwasyon namin sa Thor na naging valhalla.


  50. Thor failed because napasok siya ng botters. It was advertised as bot free kaya madaming players ang naglaro doon. Pero nang mapasok na ng bots, madaming nawalan ng gana at nag-quit. Kung di napasok ng bots ang Thor it would still be alive. And don’t forget the numerous bugs and rollbacks na kumumbinsi din sa maraming players na mag-quit.

    Since we Thorians will be forced to go to Valhalla, sana naman ay nakahanda doon ang LU para mapigilan ang mga bots. Huwag sanang magaya Valhalla sa Valkyrie which is now a bots paradise.


  51. newbies going to enter thor would still have a hard time competing with the veterans of the server eventhough they have been stripped off with their items excluding the ones they can bring (reminds me of Valkyrie Profile a game from the PS1 - when you send your Einherjar to Valhalla they carry with them there midgardly posession) which adds a quite a lot of story with it.

    The only problem is, Thor was invaded with 3rd Party Programs even before it will turn into Valhalla. Meaning veterans from that server have accumulated ubber l33t equips with them and levels making them the server’s superiors.

    Veterans of Thor would surely take advantage of this and return to Thor to salvage what items they can, let’s face it you can create 9 characters to put all your important items with them even if they would go to the 90% overweight limit which is not a problem since they can bring it with them because technically it is in their inventory.

    I suggest you think about things first before you implement your plans.

    if not for thorians i dont think Valhalla will exist…the declline number of players was due to some bugs,dup, rollback(etc) which leads LU to decide to shut it down(THOR) and make way for Valhalla…

    dont you worry Thorians will set a good example for the newbie players..not to mention Thorians are used to be vigilant fighting against bots….
    if you think we thorians are just trying to take advantage from other people from our High level Chars..think again…hehehe..ill be helping newbies with mah High Priest just pm me ingame when Valhalla resumed…MenyaK…lolz

  56. Hey Waukeen, has Thor been down since the maintenance ended on 28? I was just wondering if my remaining game time would be converted to Rok Points if my last log-in was on 27, which is our WoE date. From what I understood from your, uhhh… article? news? post? *scratches head* Bah, whatever… Anyway, from what I understood, our time would only be converted if we logged in from 28-onwards. I haven’t logged in as of 28, so I was really worried.
