I’m sure most of you have probably heard of the Last Airbender cartoon series. It’s one of the more famous franchises that was shown in Nickelodeon. What was really nice about this series is that they had the right mix of comedy, action, and drama that can entertain not just kids, but also young adults and adults alike. The franchise has been so successful that they’ve done several seasons worth of the anime, and now Hollywood is going to take a crack at it. Slash Film posted the official trailer of the movie and I’ve embedded the trailer here as well. Watch it after the break.
LAST AIRBENDER MOVIE
Here’s the synopsis:
Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire.
The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film’s hero, the reluctant young Aang (Noah Ringer), is the “Last Airbender” — the Avatar who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together.
Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Dev Patel plays the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko. Exiled from the Fire Nation by his father, Zuko is sent to capture the Avatar in order to restore his honor and right to the throne.
The Last Airbender is being targeted for a July 2nd 2010 release.
1 year to go before this hits the theaters! Definitely going to watch this one. I just hope they don’t butcher it like what they did with Dragonball Evolution.

I got chills when I saw the Fire Nation Armada throwing fireballs at the Air Temple. I’ve known of this for some time now but I haven’t checked up on it since the animated series ended. I hope M. Night Shyamalan doesn’t disappoint, then again I like most of his movies even if many didn’t.
From what I know of, The Last Airbender is slated for three movies. Each movie will be taking a jab at the story of each season of the animated series. So this movie will focus on Book 1: Water: how Aang, Katara, and Sokka became a family and how Aang is going to master Waterbending. I want to see this movie’s version of the Northern Water Tribe’s North Pole City and the Siege of the North battle, that’ll be epic if done right.
Unfortunately, based on the trailer this movie might not be as faithful to the core material as I hope. The trailer said that Aang is “all that remains of a once powerful nation.” Aang is an Air Nomad. Air Nomads didn’t have a formal nation. Air Nomads are free from borders and they emphasize on freedom of the body and the spirit. Aside from four Air Temples in each direction of the compass where young Air Benders train their bending, the Air Nomads didn’t have their own territory and they definitely didn’t show their power off, they focus on peace and defense.
Too bad James Cameron already got the title Avatar for his 2009 movie. M. Night Shyamalan had to settle for the animated show’s subtitle, The Last Airbender. It’s too bad really.

After reading this post I started googling information about the movie and I found out that there is a controversy about racism surrounding this movie. As it turns out many Asians and Asian Americans; fans, actors and media professionals alike are outraged about the casting of white actors to portray the main heroes of the movie. If you are a fan of Avatar you would know that the show was based around the re-imagination of ancient Asian, Inuit, Aztec, and Amazon cultures and people, and nowhere in the entire animated series did a white person appear so why the change of race for the heroes? What’s worse is aside from changing the hero characters white they cast all the villain characters as Asians and other racial minorities in the US. Heroes are white and villains are any other race. It’s like white supremacy Hollywood style. It was actually a concern of mine that white actors will appear in the movie. As it turns out my fear came true. My concern was the integrity of the character of the show I love but apparently for many people the issue goes further than that. I’m not Asian American and Filipinos did not appear in the cartoon at all so I don’t know exactly how feel about the issue but to put things in perspective, what if National Geographic decided to make a documentary about the origins of humans according to different cultures and they showcased the story of “Makisig at Maganda” but instead of using Filipino actors to portray them they use white actors instead, that’ll be insulting to any proud Filipino. That’s what angered many people, the idea of the movie industry that non-white actors cannot fulfill the role of heroes. Angry enough that they launched an online campaign against the movie and Paramount studios and are encouraging people to boycott the film.

What he said.
Also, people really need to watch this series. I’d seen trailers of it on Cartoon Network when it came out a couple years ago, and I just dismissed it as “just another kid cartoon”. However (and fortunately) the guys on the Totally Rad Show are such fans of this series (going on and on about it on several episodes) that I just had to check it out.
Can I just say, my mind was BLOWN. This “kid cartoon series” has more depth, character, and just pure MEAT on it than a LOT of “adult series” today. It should be watched by EVERYONE. My wife hates cartoons, but I kept raving on and on about it, and was able to convince her to watch a couple of episodes. She watched the whole series in a span of less than a week. It’s that good.
