Spiderman to star in Robotech the Movie

Tobey Maguire, most popularly known as Spiderman, is now eyeing a leading role in the big-screen adaptation of the classic sci-fi cartoon series Robotech. It will be interesting to see Tobey throw away the Spidey costume and suit up as a mecha pilot when he plays Rick Hunter or maybe Roy Fokker. To those who don’t know, Robotech enjoyed tremendous success during the 90’s and it quickly built up a loyal fun base and cult following that can probably rival Star Trek. The sci-fi series has three parts and I personally enjoyed the SDF and Invid story arcs. I have no love for the Dana Sterling part of the series.

“We are very excited to bring Robotech to the big screen,” Maguire said. “There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film.”

The Brigands of Rattleborge scribe Craig Zahler has been tapped to pen the screenplay, and he has plenty of material to draw from. The sprawling series has spawned comic books, novels, video games, soundtracks, a collectible card game and a few feature films, including 2006’s Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, which saw a limited theatrical release. A two-DVD collector’s edition is due out in November.

While Maguire’s involvement in the next generation of Robotech casts doubt on whether he’d be willing to suit up for a fourth Spider-Man movie, the new film’s pedigree could at least give Transformers—as well as various other upcoming giant-robot flicks—a run for its money.

Transformers’ $311 million domestic haul for DreamWorks-Paramount and Regency’s recent acquisition of the rights to ’80s TV favorite Voltron: Defender of the Universe (another Japanese import) just may have something to do with Warner Bros.’ decision to snag its own giant-robot franchise.

10 years ago, we could only dream about seeing Robotech on the big screen. But after seeing the Transformers, anything is really possible these days. The technology movie production teams have access to is no joke, and I’m sure that Robotech will be a blockbuster when it comes out. Here’s a clip of the SDF1, the main ship of the story, firing it’s main cannon.

Lastly, let me give a shout out to a good friend and officemate - Kiven Codamon. He also writes about Maguire’s take on Robotech in his blog. Feel free to visit him at the Codamon Experience. Other than Salleh, Kiven has always been there as well to help me fix up this blog. Thanks man!

  3. why cant they just call it macross instead and they have to stick with stupid robotech?

  4. I hope they will push through with creating more episodes of the Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles.. And hope they stick to the storyline & abilities or attitudes of the characters unlike Transformer that they have a “new” story like Megatron was a plane & there was no longer Cybertron o.O The Shadow Chronicles is really awesome, talk about a new storyline but still stick to the events that happened with the old one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpTQBOEdZkM

  8. @Sheila: Yeah I’m really excited myself! I loved the Invid story arc. Hopefully they stretch this one out like Harry Potter, Lol. @Dodge: The Invid are the aliens that invade earth. They look like big crabs. @Derek: Thanks for the link!

  9. @Valfogg: I think it has something to do with the copyright. heh

  10. Americans really do change things…. for the worst…! Grabeng laki nitong Macross (i’ll call it macross since it’s the original) it’s a flying fortress, a robot as big as a city, gundams can fight freely inside. It’s like those gundam space station that can move and fire ammos haha.

  11. @roiji Macross was an alternative title we know but for me, Macross is more focus on the fighters while if you say Robotech it is more focus on the Battle ship but its already there, and since US & UK is what makes money then maybe thats why they are going with Robotech not to mention the fan base.. @Wauks Medyo OT sa topic, seen the Bleach Movie, DL mo nlng sa Dattebayo over 700mb.. posted some screenies at my blog http://sirecount.multiply.com/journal/item/2/Bleach_the_Movie_Memories_of_Nobody

  12. macross(the name of sdf1 in the original series) is a city on itself made when the civilians on the island where macross was being repaired was suddenly folded thru space.

the only ship bigger than macross is the excelion mothership of gunbuster which was an exploration ship.

  13. Wow I wonder who gets to be cast as Admiral Gloval

  14. I wonder if its just a coincidence that next year will be the release of Macross Frontier. Personally I prefer Macross before Carl Macek changed the story.
