Apple’s 3G iPhone was hit badly in India when a lot of the consumers decided not to buy it due to the insanely high price. This is a big set-back since India is one of the fastest growing mobile market in the world. We made the same prediction that it will happen here in the Philippines. I mean… come on! There’s so many things you can buy with P38,000. That’s already a second hand Macbook. Slap 10k more and you have down payment for a brand new car already. P38,000 is like… 345 Double Cheeseburger Meals (Go Big Time).

More after the jump.
From Inquirer.Net:
“Hefty price tag keeps queues away,” said India’s Economic Times daily.
The eight-gigabyte model of the phone, which includes a built-in iPod and a desktop-class web browser, sells for 31,000 rupees (712 dollars), while the 16 GB version goes for 36,100.
Technology writer Nitya Chaudhury told Agence France Presse: “I like its looks, but at that price I can get something cheaper that does as much.”
A spokesman for India’s leading mobile company Bharti Airtel — which is selling the iPhone along with rival Vodafone Essar, owned by Britain’s Vodaphone Group Plc — said it was “not possible to give a (sales) trend.”
But, in what appeared to be an attempt to explain away the low buzz surrounding the product, he said the “iPhone is a very aspirational project — it’s not conceived of as a mass device.”
A manager at one New Delhi phone showroom, who did not want his name used, said sales of the iPhone so far were “not very good. We’ve had a few buyers and people just in to look at it.”
The Indian price is far higher than the 199 dollars paid by US customers to the telecom giant AT&T for the phone. AT&T heavily subsidises the phone and makes money by tying the customer to an expensive annual subscription.
But vendors say they are confident the Apple gadget will find its place in the Indian market despite the higher price and the fact that India has yet to launch 3G networks needed to support faster browsing and downloads.
What else can you buy with P38,000? Lol.

as i have said before… paying 38k for an iphone 3g that ONLY HAS A 2 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA AND CANNOT SHOOT VIDEOS is totally insane. i’d rather go for the N82… 5 megapixels with carl zeiss optics and xenon flash. of course you won’t have the touch screen feature but i can live with that… for only around 20k.
345 go big time double cheeseburger meals… now i’d rather have that too haha. or maybe the n82 + the big time meals for the 18k pesos.
that’s probably the biggest downfall of apple products. i mean i know apple products are unique and are good alternatives against its competitors, but tagging these products with a big price tags doesn’t usually equate to sales when marketed to a country whose people don’t earn as much or as fast as americans or europeans…
..especially in the philippines where filipinos tend to consider the price factor more as basis if a certain product is ‘buyable’. if they give the price a thumbs down, most of the time they’ll just look for other similar products.

- 1 brand new laptop
)
- 1 gaming console
- tons and tons of clothes and FOOD!
- a cellphone with a better price yet cheaper (and i have extra cash for that lolz)
or i could save the cash for my future investments hahahahahaha! imagine what we can really really do wid 38k rather than buy something ThAt expensive :p
