• 21st July 2007 - By Wauks

It’s 11:32 PM here, so it means that it’s probably 10:30PM there in Manila. To those who don’t know, it’s actually my birthday today! I’m 25 years old now, and it’s only now that I have the chance to sit back, think, and reflect on the past few years of my life. I spent most of today going around and supervising Team Philippines here in Seoul and this is the first instance that I have quiet time for myself, hehe. 4 years ago, I started on a journey in Midgard when I registered an account and created a mage called mystryl. I later deleted that mage because I wanted a job that was more involved with money so I decided to make a merchant and named him “Waukeen” (That’s where I got the nickname Wauks/Waukster). I never thought that logging into an online game would literally have a major impact on my life.

Together with my friends, we started a guild and named it the Shadow Circle. We became competitive and even went on to recruit and merge guilds into our fold. As our ranks grew, I gained more friends and people that I could count on for support not just in-game, but also in real life. I remember facing Rebirth back in 2004 for the chance to represent Chaos for the first Ragnarok World Championships. It’s weird because right now I’m here in Korea with Leic, the guildmaster of Armada, a guild which is actually the descendant of Rebirth.

Ragnarok Online also paved the way for a lot of personal victories and failures. Together with a few guildmates, we started a company called Shadow Circle Eternity Incorporated, and put up 129 Square, an internet cafe in front of the Ateneo De Manila in Katipunan. This seemingly expensive and dangerous business venture grossed more than 400,000 PHP monthly. I remember also getting shot while playing Ragnarok Online in an internet cafe when a group of muggers stormed the cafe and put a gun against the head of my girlfriend. I remember having several parties with my guildmates, and tasting sweet success when we would conquer our opponents in the battlefield. Ragnarok Online is a game that has defined my professional career and even personal life. To this very day, I have good friends that I can count on and these people are guildmates that I met inside the world of Midgard.

When I was hacked-deleted, I signed up with one of Level-up Games competitors – netGames. I started out as the Community Manager for Pangya, and later became the Brand Manager for Fly for Fun. When ePLDT bought out Level-up Games, I was honestly worried because I was really angry with the company that published Ragnarok Online. It’s ironic that when the merger happened, Ragnarok Online was offered to me by the CEO – Jane Walker.

Now I celebrate my 25th birthday away from friends and family. I’m terribly sad that I can’t share this moment with my girlfriend of almost 7 years. However, I can still smile and be content because Level-up Games gave me a chance to be here at the pinnacle of the game that has shaped my life and career. Thank you so much for giving me the chance to be here at Seoul, Korea, to witness the Ragnarok World Championships.

In the coming days, I’ll start to let go of Ragnarok because I’ve been assigned to handle Ragnarok 2: Gate of the World. It will be a very difficult and challenging job, especially since the expectations of the game are high. I would like to thank all of you who have shown support in my stead as Ragnarok’s Brand Manager and I humbly apologize as well to all those who were not satisfied, especially with all the bugs that have come up. The job of being a Brand Manager for an online game is not easy – and maintaining this blog is really double the stress. It is in this light that I thank you the most important person to me in the world – the person who gives me the strength and inspiration to forge on and succeed. I’d like to say thank you to my girlfriend, Mich. It’s really true that behind every great man is a woman.

Maraming salamat po and good luck to Team Philippines! LABAN PILIPINAS!
