MMORPG Free-to-Play Madness

Level-up Games decided to up the ante in the Free-to-play MMORPG market when they introduced Perfect World to the local gaming community. Perfect World continues to grow with each day and I really won’t be surprised if it becomes one of the biggest MMORPGs in the Philippines. The game has a lot of potential, especially since it has the Territorial Battle Feature which is very similar to Ragnarok Online’s War of Emperium. A few weeks ago, Level-up Games announced that the popular science fiction game - Rising Force Online, will also become Free-to-play.

More on this after the jump.

Our competitors are pushing in the free-to-play market, and it’s not surprising that many jumped into it because it was a novelty. Sad to say, the quality of free games is usually not at par with premium service games. That has changed with Perfect World, and now with Rising Force Online. You want a premium free game that’s set in a sci-fi setting with robots and mecha? There’s RF. You want a fantasy MMORPG in chinese setting? There’s Perfect World. Both of these games can easily qualify as triple A games and it’s only a matter of time before RF makes a comeback and PW dominates the competition.

Now the question is - will Ragnarok Online go free-to-play? I won’t answer it just yet but those who have been going to the recent FGDs and community discussions here at Level-up already know what’s in store for Ragnarok Online.

Talk about having a big year for the industry! To think we still haven’t launched Ragnarok 2: Gate of the World. heh

    What exactly does that mean? As PAYING customers, I think we all deserve a straight answer on this one.

  3. F2P Rose -> No More Rose …
    F2P RF -> …

  4. No More RF? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    i like RF though d ako tumagal duon
    hiwalay na kasi kami ng mga friends namin :(

  5. I suggest make pRO2 P2P. We already learned a lesson in pROSE. Do you want to make that mistake again?

  6. umm…. sna maging F2P RO2 just wanna try lng for 1hr then quit na ahahaha

  7. The only mistake pROSE did is simply being P2P. Most players couldn’t access pROSE and wouldn’t mind trying it because of the expensive barrier. Tantra was once P2P, it became F2P a couple of years ago and its still alive and kicking… But beware of the hackers in Tantra hehehe…

  8. dami na botters kapag f2p na ragnarok.

  9. P2P is still the best option for a quality MMOs. Provided that we have free trial period for the game just to serve as a “sneak preview”. XD

  10. But P2P is not advisable if your a student.. Besides, buying a load for 1 week while playing the game by 3 days max only is a waste.. Not to mention the weekend is only good for studying, unless you planned to go for 12 year Bachelor college course…

  11. Oh yeah, another thing.. Sword of the New World (Granado Espada K2 Network Version) just turned F2P.. They said its the best model for the long run.. And of course, GE is on the same level of Ro2 when it comes to gameplay and graphics.(Yes I’ve played the game, the one hosted by IAH Games). Maybe because GE has low population that’s why it turned F2P. Of course, RO2’s biggest rivals is “LineageII, Tantra Extreme and Philippines, Flyff, Ran, and some casual IP E-Games games.

    RF going F2P is a sign of bankruptcy. Another thing is that P2P is the trend today. A good marketer always follows the consumers taste (The trends), and must focus on a wider market. The wider the market, the higher the possibility of survival. Unless you’ve captured enough market, that’s the time to go premium (Learned this from the seminar I’ve attended last month). THanks for Reading!!

  12. make pRO F2P and it will be goodbye for me… para sakin, ang tingin ko sa mga P2P na online games na nagiging F2P eh mga larong nilalangaw na. the reason? because people playing those games don’t think they are getting their money’s worth. nywy, ano nga ba mga bagay na paboritong pamugaran ng langaw? garbage. and most people don’t settle for garbage.

  13. The beginning of the end for RF Online.

    Paano kasi ang mahal… 500/month? Wakokok

  14. may bayad na nga di pa rin namin makuha ung 100% bot-free thor namin, gagawin n’yo pang f2p? ok lang kau? we don’t mind paying… basta gawin nyo lng trabaho nyo LUG… at ung essence ng thor ipatupad nyo ng maayos and we won’t leave the game, gets? uulitin ko… WE DON’T MIND PAYING JUST GIVE US WHAT IS DUE TO US, specially Thorians.

  15. bkt na suspend acct ko sa ragnaboardS?!?!?!?

  16. malabong maging F2P RAGNAROK!!di nawalan ng nag papa sweldo sa mga taga LEVEL UP!!!AMININ!!!

  17. I think moving into Free2Play is a great move Carlo. My kids play Ragnarok but they end up spending most of their time in SoulRO because it is free. I’m sure there are new business models the company can explore especially with the brand value recall of RO in the Philippines.

  18. most likely ang gagawin ng LU! is gagawa ng F2P server like malaysia and taiwan… meron paring P2P. Kung baga parang thor na f2p. puwede niyong gawin yung thor yung gawin niyo f2p at higpitan niyo yung bot control…. wala nang silbe yung thor since botted server narin yun….

  19. pRO, free to play?! o_O

  20. hmm free to play thats a big NO! siguro kasi hmm ilang taon na ba nag operate ang LUG sa phil.? and by RO kitang kita tayu sa world trade center tingin mo ang isang game (online game)kaya gawin katulad ng ginawa ng LUG na sa world trade center ginaganap ang annual tournament san sila kukuha ng pera tingin nyu? sa pag kaka alam ko RO lang ata meron ganito tingin nyu guys? may nabalitaan na ba kayu? other online game na sponsor sila sa mga gnyang event? kung free to play ang isang online game kaya nya ba mag sponsor sa ganong event walang kita ha kasi nga free to play eh wat do you think? ito countdown na tyu sa RPC world trade center ulit tayu for 2 days hmm its money parin di ako naniniwala na bankrupt na RO kung susukatin mo ang years kung ilang taon na sila nag operate still we have to buy load 4yrs nag ka free to play na lahat ng bagong games pero RO is not parin hehehe i mean a big buss here bat ko free to play to kung kikita parin ako ng malaki diba hope you get it..

  21. i would suggest maintaining pRO as P2P then pRO2 as F2P but with a twist..like loading in pRO gives you some sort of credit to pRO2..thus maintaining the integrity of pRO and still promoting pRO2..

  22. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to FREE2PLAY pRO2. 100%!! Wag na kayung umasa yan kc biggest Hit nnmn pro2 ehh at world class po ang game na yun.

  23. To think F2P games are very fast to died so easy within just a year. Still…pro2 will be P2P.

  24. free to play.. but pay to enjoy heh

  25. ccr are just a-holes, forcing upon us rf players the f2p or no episode 2 ultimatum.

  28. lol…to all those who think p2p games going f2p is a sign of it’s dethroning, it isn’t true…really!!! what some other guy said that players don’t mind about paying for good service is way factual yet don’t you think that most of the gaming population are in the teenage genera? come to think of it, if players patronized ragnarok even if it’s p2p, paano pa kaya pag f2p na? the recently implemented business model of rf is good though for it gives us, gamers an option…that resort could be an “alas” on your part…the only thing that makes this situation unlikely is that the uber-tremendous-never-ending bot frenzy on ragna can’t be resolved yet…duh!! so try to scrutinate your arses of and reflect on the possible gain you might get on making ur games f2p!! ayusin nyu lang ang anti-bot/hack system nyu ok na yun!!! premium item sales can pay for those “undeniably-good” services naman siguro diba!?

  29. WAUKS TELL THE CEO OF LEVEL OF OR SINUMANG MATAAS SA KATUNGKULAN JAN NA MAKE A DIFFERENCE.. ANG TAGAL NA NG RO BUT STILL BUHAY NA BUHAY PA RIN… ISIPIN NYU N LNG NG YARI SA ROSE KUNG SA ROSE NGA WLANG BOT NA WALA YUNG GAME RO PA KAYA NA PURO BOTS? PRANG BINIGYAN NYU LNG SILA NG CHANCE NA MAKAPAG BOT NG HARVERTER NILA AS MANY AS THEY WANT.. I CHOOSE NO TO F2P!! STICK TO THE ORIGINAL BUSINESS TYPE!!

  30. NAKO DONT DARE ME!! MAG QUIT TALAGA AKO PAG NAG F2P YAN MAPERA NAMAN MGA TAONG NAG LALARO NG RAGNA KAYA WAG NYU NA F2P PA MUMUGARAN LNG NG MGA SQATER ANG RAGNA KUNG NAG KATAON!!!! PURO BOT PA… KUNG MAGIGING F2P MAN MAG DARK RO NA LANG AKO!!

  31. F2P ROSE=> NO MORE ROSE, F2P RF=>COMMING SOON…F2P RAGNA=>UP NEXT…. THIS WILL LEAD YOU GUYS TO AN END….

  32. katapusan na din ata ng RF hahaha

  33. hay nako kahit anu mangyari.. pay to enjoy prin e4

  34. hays…baket d available ang rf client via bittorrent?? tagal ko na sinusubukan dload yan, ayaw tlga!!! tsaka ok lng na f2p RO kahit forever basta maayos lng services, walang lag, walang bot, walang bugs!!! un lng…

  35. ganito ha.. tingnan mo yng PW free to play pero kumikita ang LU sa mga yuan at gold etc. why not make RO like PW? diskarte nyo na yan LU. i understand na need nyo dn kumita coz its still business.. pero mark my word dami babalik sa RO pag F2P na ang game

  36. [...] seems that the trend this pas few months was to go Free 2 Play as seen with the release of Ragnarok Online’s free to play Valkyrie Server and Rising Force [...]
