According to a study conducted in the United States by Magid Associates, consumers under 35 years old are shifting from TV to the internet for their leisure time and entertainment. In the study, 92% of all internet users use the internet at least once weekly for entertainment purposes. This is a mix of surfing, online gaming, e-mail, and other activities on the web. Because of this, around 35% of them end up watching less TV. This is the scenario in the United States, how about the Philippines? My thoughts after the jump. By the way, feel free to leave a comment and discuss.
“Many consumers are reporting that new media is cannibalizing their viewing of TV. This self-reported reduction of TV viewing is across a broad range of Internet users, including those who watch online video, use social networks, and otherwise use their PCs for entertainment,” according to the analyst. Online gaming is another entertainment favorite, he suggested.
I will agree that the internet is grabbing a lot of time from existing internet users. I myself rarely watch TV anymore since I would rather download stuff and watch them on my own time or just surf Youtube for random videos. I also still play a lot of online games like Grand Chase so that also takes up a significant amount of time that I would have normally used in watching TV. In fact, one habit I have is I like to have multiple episodes to stack first so I can just watch them all in one sitting as opposed to watching one episode per week.
However, I don’t think it’s one the same level or scale as the US. The internet infrastructure here in the Philippines still needs a lot of improvement. While the quality is something that is up for debate, it’s good to note that SMART, PLDT, and all the other telcos have been pushing aggressively to give affordable and convenient internet access to the Filipino consumer.
How about you guys? Has internet usage taken time away from TV?

Kailan kaya magkakaroon ng Digital TV dito sa Pinas. :gg:

My TV has been replaced by my PC. With my PC and the Internet I have more control over what I watch and when I watch it. Before I was forced to arrange my schedule to what I wanted to watch on TV. It was a choice between missing your program and do what you needed to do or watch your program but push everything you needed to do aside. I admit that for me the later was more common. But now that I am part of the workforce, pushing things to the side for a TV time slot is unacceptable.
My daily habit involves setting up my PC to download my favorite shows, visiting waukster.com to comment on your recent posts, visiting other websites I frequent, and maybe login to Grand Chase for a few minutes (or an hour). Then when I sleep, my PC is hard at work downloading all those shows I had setup earlier (not forgetting to setup auto-shutdown to save electricity once the downloads are finished). Then on my days off I watch everything my PC downloaded, like my own weekly mini marathon. Gundam 00, House M.D., Heroes, Boston Legal, CSI, and those are just the ones that are currently in their run. There’s also a lot more on the Internet you can’t get on TV like; YouTube, interactive content, games, games and more games, not to mention the naughty bytes, and more.
I traded my remote for a mouse and surely I’m not the only Filipino that has.

I agree with the study, in fact the only show I remember watching is wowowee that is when im eating lunch with the family.. after that im back again surfin.
But then it is a fact that this only goes to consumers 35 yrs old below so a television set is not really useless at a certain home.

Yes, I would rather surf the net than watch TV although I watch TV once or thrice(walang internets sa dorm T_T’) and when this show I like is on.
sana lang tumaas na din ang kalidad ng internet sa pinas…

But still, this is not the case in majority of provincial barrios. This fact only applies to major cities like Manila, Cebu and perhaps Davao City. We are still a third world country.
