Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like deciding between the Samsung Omnia i900 and the Globe Apple 3G iPhone will be a little bit harder. Globe announced through a press release that they’re cutting down the prices of the prepaid 3G iPhones by around P4,000. Originally the 8GB model was priced at P41,899 and the 16GB model at P48,899. The new price for the 8GB iPhone is now at P37,599 and the 16GB model at P43,799. Note that the prepaid phones already come with P1,000 load spread over 5 months (P200/month). They also have a running promo that the first 1,000 buyers will get an additional P1,000 discount.

The most important question now is if the P4,000 price cut is enough to convince a lot of the mobile phone users here in the country to drop their current phones and buy the 3G iPhone? I’m sure that Globe is really banking on this to grab significant market share from SMART. The 3G iPhone has a lot of potential, but the steep price will really prevent Globe from getting a reasonable ROI. If there’s one thing you have to appreciate about this is that the executives of Globe are listening. They could have stuck with the price that they released but instead they went back to the negotiation table with Apple to cut the price down, even by just a little.

By the way, please note that I have a running poll on what 3G Phone the readers of Waukster prefer. Check it out at the upper right hand corner of the blog. :)

So tell me how much will the upcoming Nokia N96 and Sony Ericsson X1 handsets cost when they come out?(yes i know N96 is available in some places, not been fully released here yet) I bet they won’t be any lower than the initial price for the 8GB iPhone at prepaid price. In the UK a prepaid 8GB iPhone costs £350 to purchase, while a sim free Nokia N96 is retailing for over £500. I don’t know what Globe are prepared to offer prepaid iPhone customers but here, o2 are offering 12 months free unlimited data browsing and free Wi-Fi access at any one of 10,000 hotspots all over the country.

I know a lot of people complain about the cost of an iPhone, well it was never intended for the low end of the consumer market but the high end. Same with their Apple products, they are expensive but far superior to anything else in the market, the iPod, need i say anything more? Steve Jobs never intended for the iPhone to be a mass product, he only wanted projected sales of 10 million handsets in an 18 month period from the launch, where Nokia’s handset sales for last year alone totaled over 130 million units sold. If Steve Jobs wanted to sell more and aim for all corners of the consumer market, he would’ve done, but to sell a cheaper iPhone just wouldn’t be as good as they are now.
