Gaming: Ragnarok Server Merge Mechanics v2.0

I just came back from a rather long meeting with Gravity, pRO Team, and the Level-up IT Department. Suffice to say, the Server Merge is one of the toughest projects I’ve ever handled in my online gaming career. According to Andy and Jinn (Gravity), this project has been discussed and debated on for more than a year already. Anyway, we’re faced with the final batch of revisions and I am really irritated with what happened. Initially Gravity wanted to take out the 9 character slots (again) and for us to wait until July before the 9 slots could be implemented - which is just ridiculous. FYI - the final mechanics will probably be posted at the official RO website on Wednesday. We’re targetting to do the merge sometime in May 10 - 16. Final date will be announced on Wednesday as well. Read on to see the revisions and the answers to most of your questions.

WHAT WILL RESET?
The following features will be reset when the merge happens. This is unavoidable and all other countries who did the Server Merge experienced the same thing.

- Agit Ownership
- Agit Economy & Safeguard
- Alchemist Rankings
- Taekwon Rankings
- Blacksmith Rankings
- Aldebaran Race Track Rankings
- Warp Points (Acolytes, Priests, Monks, Champions, and High Priests)
- Godly Seal Quest
- KAFRA PIN

WHAT WILL NOT RESET?
The following features will NOT BE RESET. They will stay the same before and after the merge.

- Adopted Babies
- Marriage
- Cart Items (Blacksmith, Merchant, Mastersmith, Alchemist, Bio-chemist)
- Cute Pet
- Homonculous (Alchemist/Bio-chemist)
- Kafra Storage (Unless you exceed the 300 Limit)
- Guild Level
- Guild EXP

CHARACTER SLOT LIMIT
Character Slot Limit is back to 5 from the original 9 due to technical problems. However, I was able to convince Gravity to do MANUAL TRANSFERS a week after the merge. This means that we will patch the additional 4 slots after the merger and players can file tickets and we will forward your tickets to Gravity. They will manually transfer your characters to the server of your choosing as long as you were affected by the split account.

Let me give you the worst case scenario that I can possiblty think of.

Account Username: carlo
Character Number per Server: Chaos (5), Loki (4), Odin (4), Fenrir (5), Sarah (5), Iris (4), Lydia (4)

After the merger, his accounts will be split because he exceeded the 5 Character Slot Limit not just for one server set, but for all three. Take note that if you exceed the 5 Character Slot Limit for even just 1 server set, you will have split accounts. The main account with the original username will get the characters from the dominant servers. The dominant servers are the ones with more characters compared to their peers in the server group. For example, in the Baldur server group (Chaos Loki), carlo has 5 characters in Chaos. Chaos is the dominant server which means the main account will get 5 characters from Chaos and the split account will get the 4 characters from Loki. In the case of a tie, the system will pick the older server to be the main. Here’s what will happen to him after the merge:

MAIN ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo
Baldur Server - 5 characters (from Chaos)
Tyr Server - 5 characters (from Fenrir)
Freya Server - 5 characters (from Sarah)

SECOND ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo2
Baldur Server - 4 characters (from Loki)

THIRD ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo3
Tyr Server - 4 characters (from Odin)

FOURTH ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo4
Freya Server - 4 characters (from Lydia)

FIFTH ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo5
Freya Server - 4 characters (from Iris)

However, after the merge, we will be able to implement the additional 4 slots. This means players can already file tickets requesting for an account transfer. Take note you can only transfer characters in the SAME server family. You cannot transfer your Freya character into Baldur. You can just transfer the 4 characters in carlo2 to your main account since Baldur just has 5 characters from Chaos. That would make it a total of 9 characters for your Baldur server in your MAIN account.

The question in your mind right now should be - why can’t we just implement that 9 slots prior or during the merger? According to Gravity, all the other countries who did their merges did it with just the 5-character slot limit, and adopted the additional 4 slots shortly afterwards. It is technically possible - but it will take them time to develop. However they couldn’t give us a timeline and I’m guessing it will take them months before they could do something like that.

KAFRA STORAGE LIMIT
Another restriction is the 300 Kafra Storage Limit. The same rule applies - you must have a total of 300 or less items in your Kafra Storage for each Server Group. Chaos Kafra + Loki Kafra must NOT exceed 300. Here’s an example:

Account Username: carlo
Storage per Server: Chaos (300), Loki (300), Odin (300), Fenrir (300), Sarah (300), Iris (300), Lydia (300)

It’s quite simple. The Kafra splits when you exceed 300. The main account will have the initial 300 for all the three new servers. It will look something like this:

MAIN ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo
Baldur Server - 300 (from Chaos)
Tyr Server - 300 (from Odin)
Freya Server - 300 (from Iris)

SECOND ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo2
Baldur Server - 300 (from Loki)

THIRD ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo3
Tyr Server - 300 (from Fenrir)

FOURTH ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo4
Freya Server - 300 (from Lydia)

FIFTH ACCOUNT USERNAME: carlo5
Freya Server - 300 (from Sarah)

Dominance is established once again by the number of characters. In case of a tie, the older server is declared the main server.

GAME TIME AND ROK POINTS
Existing game time and Rok Points will be credited to the MAIN ACCOUNT. Secondary split accounts will not get any bonus game time and rok points.

GUILDS WITH THE SAME NAME
Guilds with the same name from other servers will have the first letter of their respective server inserted to the name as a suffix. For example, there is Shadow Circle chaos and Shadow Circle Loki. After the merge, there will be two Shadow Circles. The first one (from chaos) will be Shadow Circle [C] and from Loki will be Shadow Circle [L].

NAME CHANGE
All characters get a chance to change their name once for 1-2 days. I’ll confirm duration by Wednesday.

Did I miss anything out? Anyway, please take time to read everything that I’ve written down. What’s best for you is to keep with the 5 character limit and 300 kafra storage for all server groups so you’ll end up with just one account without having to file a ticket for a character-account transfer. IF YOU HAVE COMMENTS/CLARIFICATIONS/SUGGESTIONS, THIS IS THE BEST TIME TO LEAVE A COMMENT.

Guys, on a final note - I would just like to stress that I did everything I could to fight for the 9 slots and the extended kafra storage. It’s good that we were able to get the additional storage a week after, which acts like a compromise on their part. In other words, pinag-laban ko kayo, Lol. By the way, there will be bonus EXP on the week of the merger. As soon as we finalize the date, I’ll post here for everyone to see.

    Sir Waukeen, add nyo naman yung SEX CHANGE sa merge. Since may CHANGE NAME, sama nyo na rin SEX CHANGE para new server new beginning. Match better narin kung deleted lahat ng guild. Para sabay sabay palevel. Suggestion lang naman po.

  11. I don’t get it. If more slots come a week after the merge, why not just delay the merge a week, then merge without the split? Wouldn’t manual transfers be more of a hassle?

    Unless there’s a possibility that the additional character slots *don’t* come after a week - or at all . . .

  20. they wont be able to have the 9 character slot prior to server merge coz of the technicality… it was mentioned in fact. It’ll be difficult for the to facilitate the 9 slots at the time of merge. REASONS: Bugs and errors could arise..


  21. Waah! 5 slots again?? I thought the worst scenario was 7 slots…now its back to 5… sob … If there will be split accounts, it’ll be unfair on the part of the players since they’ll have to reload their multiple accounts separately…

    Also, the filing for the character transfer is really a hassle on our part. Even if we can file through e-mail or other “convenient” methods, we still have to wait for quite sometime. You also mentioned “FILE” for a ticket., does that imply that not all request will be granted??

    It’ll be better if they’ll delay the server merge and give us a total of 9 slots. We have to wait longer, yes, but we need not to file for tickets or somethin’ and have split accounts

    - The 4 Seals will be reset. How about the characters who did the quest? Would it be possible for them to redo the quest again with the same char after the merge?

    - You have an account named carlo. When splitting that account you supposedly would have carlo2, but just in case there is a carlo2 account, what would happen?

  29. One possibility is that they can’t find a way to simultaneously increase slots and *automatically* transfer characters. I doubt that though. If they’re going to unlock the slots a week later though, as stated in the post, and there’s no way to automate the transfer process, why not just do the manual transfers along with the server merge, one week later? Have an extra long maintenance along with that to accomplish manually transferring everybody.

    My -evil- side is thinking that they’re banking on people not wanting to go through the hassle of filing tickets - less work, more profit.

    For the bug checking, why not test the merge in Sakray first? Merge Sakray with itself - and look at what happens. That’s what they did in kRO, if I’m not mistaken. Just curious, aside from kRO, what other ROs did a server merge?

    Guess I’m going to have to delete some characters. No sense in keeping my old monk if warps are reset, anyway - bye bye GH warp. Although the idea that I can party myself is tempting . . . nah, I can’t control two accounts at a time, anyway - and I’ve already experienced paying for two accounts at a time - not worth it.

    in case something goes wrong and we lose data:

    how far back is the backup data dated?
    what do we do to ensure that all our items our accounted for?
    are screenshots enough?
    is there any procedure we need to go through?
    lets say; take screenies before every server maintenance?

    i’ll even pay extra to ensure my accounts/items/characters have a recent backup (recent meaning april 25 recent)
    it’s because i have acquired certain goods that are not that cheap.

    I’m not sure which guilds have the same names. Anyway with regards to the Neuralizer, I’ve already asked Gravity to look into it. Medyo 1 month na ata wala yun. According to the bug reports that we got - it just won’t open (from the box).

    Yes after we patch the 9 slots a week or two after the merge, you guys can file a ticket so that all of your characters will be in one account. Just don’t go over the 9 slot limit afterwards.

    We have a testing plan already - Gravity will copy and merge various servers a day or two before the actual merge. We will be having dummy servers to er… play around with.

    For the Godly Seal Quest - yes that’s highly possible. With regards to the EXP mods, just wait for the announcement. Btw, there’s a big chance we get an EXP mod this Wednesday.

    Parang ang sagwa kasi kung sakaling magkakaron ng prefix yung name ng mga guilds. Hindi po ba pwedeng mapalitan din name ng guild?

    Nope. However, you will also get the 9 character slots and the bonus EXP when it comes. For Thor, we’re still focusing more on getting security measures up and filtering the Midgard Police applicants.

    Anyway, I hope that no disaster will occur during the merging process. Favor Sir Wauks, gawa kayo multiple backups ng database ng accounts para kung may problema yung isa, marami pang iba. Hehehehe! Maiiyak ako pag nawala lahat ng pinag-hirapan ko… sob2

I have a question/scenario regarding the name change… Here’s the scenario: Let’s say, Chaos and Loki both have players with the name “Waukeen”, after the merge both will have prefixes and both are entitled to a name change. Now that they are no longer just “Waukeen”, the name “Waukeen” is available to anyone not only to those 2(?) Assuming both players don’t want a new identity, maguunahan ba yung 2 to claim the name? And also, others can “steal” the name from them. sux

    i’d just like to ask, if my account were to be split, will the 2nd one generated for me automatically have free game time for a given period, since technically its a “new account”? heh Wala lang,naisip ko lang that this would help us quite a bit lalo na baka more than a month bago iimplement ung 9 char slots. At least this would allow us to transfer some of our items and equips to our main/original account for the time being. gawi

    So, how do you file a ticket for the naming and account transfer, and what will happen to Urdr and Thor? [I'm still trying to understand that one reply about Thor and all... we get the 9 slots even though we merge with no one, and the main things you'd go for would be server tweaking + MP right?]

    ok, so i tot na kung ndi sa merge day mismo iimplement ang 9 slots e months pa bago magagawa un. sana nga 1 week lng ang hihintayin namin. though i admit mas madali on both the players’ and gravity’s part kung same time iimplement merge and 9 slots, i will accept technical difficulties for an excuse, bka magkaroon pa ng mas malalang problem.

    as for the name change, panu ung process para mapalitan ung name/s ng character/s namin? i have no idea parin.

    as for the split account due to kafra… what if ung items ng server B e meron din sa server A? like if there are around 300 grapes in server B and around 9000 in server A, if they merge, mag-stack ba ung dalawa since same item and ndi mageexceed ng 30k? will the split account only contain items that over-stack (over 30k) and other equipments that go over 300 kafra limit, or tlgang kung ano ung laman ng kafra ng ka-merge na server e un din ang laman nung split account (and no stacking)?

    how about same equipment stacking (same as jayps’ question and my question in the previous merge update)? is there a chance na maimplement din un?

    i also want to ask about a zeny storage feature. many people have asked about it before. meron ding bank sa lighthalzen pero non-functional. im thinking this could be a feature on future episodes pero in my opinion this should have been a feature long long ago.

    and finally… what would happen in both split account cases would happen (due to kafra overstorage and not enough char slots), will the kafra split accounts and the char split accounts be different from one another or will there be a chance that both features can be done on a split account (ie, ektra items AND extra chars on one split account)?

    Your main server would be Lydia - kasi mas madami ka character dun. The age rule only applies if there is a tie.

    Great questions man. Anyway, with regards to the items, you’re correct. It must not exceed the 30,000 Limit. If you have 15,000 grapes in A and 16,000 grapes in B, when it merges, you will have a split account. The total must be equal to or less than 30,000. With regards to the zenny storage in the Kafra, I think Gravity is already doing something about that - but it will happen on a later patch.

  103. We’re having enough problems containing the bot problem in Thor so I really don’t think we can do something about all the other servers until the day we manage to fully put a lid on botting on the non-bot server.
