Gaming: Ragnarok Online 2 TV Commercial

There’s a big debate these days about how effective traditional media is against online advertising. I still believe that both have their purpose, and one cannot live without the other. That applies here in the Philippines because the internet penetration is still not that good compared to other countries. I’m pretty sure though that eventually online advertising will have a bigger role in brand building and raising awareness. I’m bringing this up because I’m deciding on whether or not to spend on TV commercials for Ragnarok Online 2 when it launches. TVC’s cost a lot, and I could easily spend that money somewhere else but the reach wouldn’t be as wide. The question is will I get enough hits to convert if I go TV or would I rather go targeted efforts with the budget? Anyway, enough of my rambling. I found a Ragnarok Online 2 TV Commercial at YouTube. I’m not sure if this is from Japan, but it looks like it, hehe. Check the commercial out after the jump!

RAGNAROK ONLINE 2 TVC (20 Seconds)

  1. TV Ads? O_O IIRC Ragnarok 1 was released without TV Ads po diba? and it has became a great hit. Lately na lang naglabasan yung mga TV Ads ng MMORPGs and they dun have the population of pRO on its prime. *shrug* For me it’s word of mouth that is the best PR practice. Have a great Closed Beta and a much greater Open Beta and the players will flow.

  2. First! Wow! Look at that… I think RO2 can get enough exposure on TV. Online advertising here in phil can also attract players though.

  3. characters on the last scene are korean so most likely this commercial is korean…

  4. I think it’s korean..?

It’s show show show time hahaha!

  5. lolx

  6. i think malaki pa rin influence ng TV commercial.

  7. if you’re targetting the mainstream audience, AKA non gamers to play RO2, then go TVC

but i’ve been playing korean beta, and this baby makes my PC QQ. realtime shadows, long loading screens, dizzying camera effects — not for your average gamer. if they can’t play RO1, they sure can’t play RO2.

eitherway,if you’re after the youtube generation in this youtube era, you should give viral advertising a try. ;-)

  8. Althought TV and tri-media is good, MMORPGs and online gaming is still a niche market. It’s not like a common product like Coke which you can just pick up after the commercial. The TV ads WILL work if 1) you have deep enough pockets to spend for it and 2) it will only be good for recall and top of mind. But we’ve already proven when we did research that RO is top of mind in MMORPGs locally, right? In fact, RO’s popularity may extend beyond the MMORPG.

My advice is for you guys to focus and target your efforts on those “most likely” to try online games. These will be users on the internet or those who have tried casual games before. I say, use your money for that.

    GM T
