Gaming: Dupe Bug Resolution

First and foremost, I’d like to wish all the guilds who will be starting their bids for the RWC Agit Lord slots tonight! Vanguards will be online tonight getting fraps because we’ll eventually make a video similar to the Sakray Method materials. We’re also starting the RWC Wild Card, and I’d like to wish all the nominees good luck as well. If you guys can’t process your vote, give it a few minutes because it’s probably due to site traffic. Anyway, on to the more pressing topic - the dupe resolution.

The good news is that we’ve actually implemented the anti-dupe system already. This was installed a few weeks ago and we’ve confirmed that it works with various contacts. If ever people try to dupe during maintenance, there’s a 1% chance that it will push through, and a 99% chance that they’ll lose the item. Hopefully by next week this will be 100% in favor of losing their stuff. However, this is just a measure that we’ve implemented here at LU, and we’re still asking Gravity to come up with a more permanent solution that won’t drain manpower during maintenance.

The second good news is that Gravity has agreed to develop a tool that will trace the original sources of the duplicated items. That means that we will be able to sanction people who abused this bug from the very start. The tool can also trace how the item travelled so there’s a paper trail. The problem is that the tool will take some time to develop, so we really need other policies implemented soon.

The question now is will we delete duplicated items from the server? The answer is a resounding YES, but on a case-to-case basis. We will not just run the original script which will indiscriminately delete everything. We will check trade logs and inventory histories to make sure that players who legally traded or bought items like this will either be compensated accordingly with zenny or the item will no longer be deleted (depends on the nature of the item). This will be a long process, and it will not just happen in one day. This, we believe, is the best course of action that will strike a balance between game integrity and protection of innocent players.

So what now? We will now be entertaining reports filed through the CS tickets and the CS calls. If you have suspects, you can easily submit their character name, server, and if possible, attach screenshots as well. The GM Team will investigate and we can assure everyone that if anyone is caught guilty, they will be sanctioned accordingly. I strongly advise everyone to refrain from buying high value items at the moment because we will start purging items tomorrow and it will last for at least 1 month. If you really need to buy items, make sure to take screenshots before and after so that you have evidence of a fair trade.

Level-up will release an official statement about this tomorrow through the official Ragnarok Online website. Lastly, I would just like to air out a warning to people who exploited this bug - your days are numbered.

    If you know of people who are duping, then the best thing to do is to report it to cust care and not to just bitch about it @_@ If you hear of anyone who can and if there is a new process for it, I’d appreciate the heads-up. That way we can nip the problem at the bud. Lastly, I don’t bluff. What I post is what I know and what has been agreed on with the other departments here at LU. I admit that there are times that what is posted here or even at the website isn’t what happens, we can only do our best to prevent that from happening in the future.

    Er.. would you rather hear na wala na lang kami gagawin about it? I understand you kasi from Thor ka, pero like what I keep saying, there are certain dependancies that only Gravity can address. That’s the main weakness in this industry - the promises of the developer.

    you said the zone servers were increased by almost 100%. Kasama ba dyan ang Thor server?? i’m playing in both tyr and thor server, sa tyr konte lang lag pero napansin ko lang na walang pinagbago sa Thor server. Nakakapagtaka lang po dahil hindi naman nadagdagan ang players ng thor tulad ng ibang servers na nag merge, kaya kung nag increase kayo ng zone sa thor by a 100% mararamdaman dapat namin ang malaking pagbabago.

    We at thor server are experiencing the same problems the other merged servers are having. sana lang we at thor get EQUAL TREATMENT mukha kc walang ginawa para mabawasan ang lag sa thor kc wala pagbabago. wla naman siguro kinalaman ang isp ko kc OK naman sa tyr

    The thor set-up is the same as before. We never changed anything but I’ll have a look at it na rin. The number of servers needed is equal to the number of players so it all boils down to having a correct ratio.

    regarding sa lag, i experienced intense lag in this night’s siege. Ung tipong lumalakad mag-isa ung char ko habang gumagamit ng skill kahit di ko pinapalakad. last siege hindi naman po ganito.

    regarding sa dupe resolution, if i’ll take screenshots during major trades, would those be enough proofs of legal trade? baka kc sabihin ng CS inedit ko lang ung screenshot embarass how about video clips?

  46. I know of a 3rd party program that exist in pRO that can produce lag, although systems were upgraded, hardware, software etc, this will not affect it Sir Wauks. To my fellow ragnarok players, all you do is type /exall. We simply call it lag software.. Try it for yourself, all delays using attritions and moving inside the agit will lessen. ^_^

    Sir Wauks, I was the one who posted requesting for a reset in Godlike Seals for each character. We are looking forward that this request will be included in your weekly maintenance tomorrow.

    is entirely over cause it’s another problem.

    The players behind dupped items would probably do something

    like this after reading or they already anticipated your decision.

    Example:

    Player A and Player B have think of a way to abuse this coming

    duped item wipeout.

    Player A intentionally traded dupped item to Player B for 300m.

    Player A character selected then use his/her different character

    or perhaps another account. Let’s name that Player A+

    then Player A+ returned 300m to Player B for nothing.

    ( Their intention is get compensated from the dupped)

    Then wednesday May 30, 2007 maintenance. It is possible

    for LUG to trace this kind of abuse and won’t be mislead

    by such a thing that would drive LUG to compensate Player B

    to gain more 300m. Thus, making it 600m. Yeah they lost

    the dupped item that they created but they gain 300m /e1.

    That’s the worst scenario later…

  77. Ganito lang yan. Kaya i-trace yan kung kelan nagkaroon ng 2 instances ng item nayun. Ngayon kung sino yung initially involved sa pag gawa ng dupe items na yun BANNED agad dapat yun.

    Yung mga items na naipasa sa mga other players kung naging fair ang trade, lets say yung original item e ibinenta sa ibang players for zeny pwedeng ibalik yung zeny niya.

    Nasa LOGS ang sikreto jan. Madali lang makita yan. Saka yung sinasabi na what if kunyari may 2 accounts yung duper na kunyari front para legal ang bentahan nila….. di pwede mangyaring ganun kasi naka LOG din ang IP ng mga characters na yun. Kaya kung yung IP na yun ay sangkot sa pagpapaikot nung item kitang kita sa logs.


  78. After reading the dupe bug resolution, I can’t help but be disappointed in the decision. It’s too bad that I only found out about the three options you were considering just now. Maybe if I found out sooner I would have been able to express my thoughts before LU decided to implement Option 3.

    Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of each option. Please bear in mind that all these options assume that duplicate items can no longer be created (as stated by waukeen in his update).

    FIRST OPTION (Delete all dupe items)
    PROS
    - Very quick solution. One maintenance only
    - People can feel safe buying again knowing there are no more dupes
    - Discourages dupers by not only deleting the duplicates, but also the original items from which the duplicates came from since all of these share the same serial numbers (at least that’s how I think it works). This will prevent dupers from trying to duplicate again since they no longer have the source item to duplicate

    - Possibility that a lot of affected players will quit or lose interest in the game
    - Items will become super rare again. This will cause the in-game prices to skyrocket and become unstable again. This is bad for the RO economy (in my opinion anyway)

    SECOND OPTION (Don’t delete anything)
    PROS
    - Very quick solution. No maintenance needed
    - People can feel safe buying again knowing there won’t be a chance that their items will be deleted
    - In-game market prices will remain stable and even continue to go down since items are more easily attainable
    - People will not get affected, therefore lowest possibility that anyone will quit or lose interest in the game

    CONS
    - LU says that the game integrity will be compromised, but I believe this is just their opinion. Given enough time, even these “rare items” will eventually be commonplace as people keep on hunting for them
    - Although dupers won’t be able create any more new dupes, they can still profit from their illegally generated items, which some people will consider unfair practice

    THIRD OPTION (Delete items, but gradually)
    PROS
    - At least offers some sort of compensation for affected players
    - At least tries to remove some duplicated items

    CONS
    - No real resolution here. The situation is not solved!
    - People will still be hesitant to buy items because they know there’s a chance it might be a dupe and will get deleted
    - Possibility that a lot of affected players will quit or lose interest in the game
    - Giving tokens is not a fair means of compensation
    - Deleting dupes will go on indefinitely. 1 month?? C’mon… how did they come up with that estimated schedule when you are only planning to manually check/delete 10-15 items per maintenance? 1 month = 4 maintenances = 60 items max. Maybe it’s possible if there are only 60 duplicated items in all the servers
    - Dupers may even be encouraged to continue to sell their duped items, as they know that these might get deleted one day. At least once it’s sold, they can earn zeny or PHP. If it was deleted before it was sold, they can try to convince LU customer service that they are innocent and even get tokens for compensation
    - LU customer service is infamous for being slow, undependable, uninformed and unreliable
    - Investigation process for dupe items is unclear and not 100% foolproof. Innocent players may be affected, while guilty players may get away with it

    - Needs the most time, needs the most effort and is the most troublesome option among the three

    Looking at all of that, it just amazes me why LU picked Option 3. Definitely not the smartest decision in my opinion. If I was asked which option would be best, I would go for either 1 or 2.

    Option 2 is the most feasible and requires the least effort. LU will continue to profit and players can feel at ease with their current items and future purchases.

    Option 1 is the most brutal, but solves the dupe bug quickly and completely. No questions asked. LU might experience some lost revenue due to players quitting, but that is the price they have to pay in order to retain the “game integrity” they proclaim RO will have once the deletion is done.

    Option 3 takes the most time, the most effort, fails to resolve any of the key issues, does not solve the problem at all, can lead to more customer complaints, relies too much on lousy customer service, still open to abuse, etc.

    In the end, all that I said is just the way things are as I see it. You are free to express any disagreements you may have. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this resolution. I know it’s already too late though… So disappointing…

  85. I think jerjer is talkin bout the massive botting in the hugel race on all servers (especially TyR). So sad!! Most of the bots there are now trans chars, pretty bold for them. There are now traders in Prontera who offer any kind of Lv. 4 weapon, just tell them and they will exchange their 1,5k medals for a Lv.4 weapon of your choice at the right price.

    The suggested option has loop holes and can be abuse. DELETE them all!….Your going to check logs right? But why can’t you check the logs of hacked items, as I remember correctly you cannot trace the items once it was traded within 24hrs(hack cases)?

    I have many accounts and I do trade my overups to use by my other character.

    I hope that you will not use this as a grounds in deleting items incase that the items are dupes, remember that all items are tradable, can be sold thru zeny, can be sold thru PHP, can pass thru email or mailbox (pRO style) and can be normally drop then loot.

    I bought some overups armors and even i trusted the people i know im not yet 100% sure that the items are LEGAL.

    Im willing to be investigated because i am 101% sure that I GOT ALL MY OVERUPS THRU BUYING WITH MY ZENY.

    Why dont you make a NPC in the game that will determine if the items are duped or having same serial numbers.

    Just incase, if someone is interested to buy VEND PUB OVERUP ITEMS they can proceed to that NPC and verify the item, annouced to the server the names of the seller and that the items is not dupe or dupe. and by that, the buyer will be informed.

    JUST A SUGGESTION!

    Let’s reserve judgement, at least they are working for a solution that could benefit the players who got victimized by the dupe items. They’re asking a month, let’s give them 2 months.

    1. On Topic: Pakilinaw lang po… kunwari po I bought a +4AH for 30M tapos hindi ko alam na dupe yung item na yun, does it mean na pag binura niyo yun, you’ll be giving back my 30M? Pano po kung walang screenshot since nabili na ito a few weeks ago, bago pa lumabas yung announcement na ito? Ano po ba yung mga factors na i-co-consider niyo sa pag-delete ng duped item na nakuha ng player from a fair trade?

    2. Off Topic: May 30 na po… ang sabi po sa Ragnarok Website ngayon niyo daw po ma-i-implement yung extra 4 slots… tuloy po ba yun? Wala po kasi kayong nilagay dun sa Weekly Updates about it eh. The announcement on the pRO website says that, “On May 30, 2007, Gravity will upload a patch that will expand the character slots from 5 to 9. ” (Quoted exactly from http://www.ragnarok.ph/news_detail.php?id=463). Can you please clarify this?
