Here’s a quick Dragon Age: Origins Gift Guide that I was able to come up with after doing some online research and based on my experience in-game. This is actually one of the more fun and casual features of Dragon Age: Origins which make it pretty interesting to play. Basically all of your companions have approval/disapproval ratings and the more positive it is, they become stronger and it also has a major impact on the over-all story line. It also opens up a lot of side quests that you can do which will develop the character plots much more.
One of the ways to improve approval rating is by giving companions gifts. Different gifts have different effects on companions so it’s better that you make sure that you give the right gifts to the right person to maximize the approval rating that you can get out of it. Here’s a partial list that can help you out:

ALLISTER
Basically all stuff related to his family, the gray wardens, and statuettes will give a big boost to Allister’s approval rating. Personally I find Allister to be one of the more fun characters in the game. He’s my main tank and I really enjoy his side comments during quests. Anyway, here’s a partial list of the gifts that you should give him:
White Runestone, Black Runestone, Stone Dragon Statuette, Onyx Demon Statuette, Duncan’s Shield, Stone Warrior Statuette, Small Carved Statuette, and Allistair’s Mother’s Amulet.

MORRIGAN
Another one of my favorite characters in the game. She’s a bit bitchy though but that makes her more lively and unique. For gifts, she appreciates jewelry (valuable stuff) as well as the Grimoires of Flemeth. My party set-up right now is actually 3 mages, which is kinda weird but at least I have fun blowing up stuff, haha. Here’s a list of the gifts for Morrigan:
Flemeth’s Grimoire, Black Grimoire, Golden Rope Necklace, Golden Demon Pendant, Golden Mirror, Tribal Necklace, Silver Chain, Locket, Silver Brooch, and Golden Amulet.

DOG
I don’t really use this character because it would really be boring to interact with a virtual dog. However some people say that he’s one of the better tanks in the game. Used him only in my party until I could get someone to replace him as the fourth character. As you can imagine, all the bone gifts go to him.
Large Bone, Ox Bone, Beef Bone, Veal Bone, and Lamb Bone

LELIANA
You’ll be very happy to get her on your party because she can open those locked chests that you could only stare at before, haha. Like Morrigan, there’s also a chance for you to “romance” her later on if you get a high enough approval. For her gifts, she likes religious stuff.
Chantry Amulet, Andraste’s Grace, Nug, Bronze Symbol of Andraste, Silver Sword of Mercy, Golden Symbol of Andraste, Etched Silver Symbol, Steel Symbol of Andraste, and Blue Satin Shoes.

STEN
Next up we have Sten. I haven’t used him yet but I hear he’s a powerhouse, especially in quickly dealing damage. For gifts, you can give him paintings. Here’s the list:
Portrait of a Goose Girl, Water stained portrait, Painting of the Rebel Queen, Totem, Sten’s Sword, and Silver Framed Still-life.

WYNN
I think every party should make it a point to have Wynn since she’s the primary healer companion that you’ll be getting. Her Group Heal is a major boost especially when you’re taking a beat down from overwhelming opponents or when you’re up against a boss.
Tattered Notebook, Fancy Scroll, Rose of Orlais, Discovering Dragon’s Blood, Guerrins of Ferelden, and Search for the True Prophet.
No, you can’t romance her.

ZEVRAN
Zevran is another funny and entertaining character that you can get and interact with. I’m sure you’ll have fun in the event when you make the decision if you will get him as a companion or not. I just went through the event yesterday and it was definitely a blast.
Antivian leather boots, Dalish Gloves, Small Silver Bar, Medium Silver Bar, Small Gold Bar, Medium Gold Bar, Silver Bracelet, Small Silver Ring, and Golden Scythe 4:90 Black.

LOGHAIN
I haven’t gotten Loghain into my party yet but most of you will know him early on in the game as one of the villains. It will be very interesting to see how everything will play out for this character. For his gifts, just give him maps. Note that if you decide to make him a companion, Allistair will leave you for good.
Map of Anderfels, Map of Ferelden, Map of Occupied Ferelden, Botanist Map of Thedas, and Ancient Map of Imperium.

OGHREN
Also haven’t reached the part of the game where I could get this dwarf. Anyway, here are the gifts that would increase your approval rating with him based on the info I got off the net.
Legacy White Shear, Garlbog’s Reserve, Alley King’s Flagon, Golden Scythe 4-90 Black, Chasind Sack Mead, and Sun Blonde Vint 01.
And that’s that! Make sure you work on the approval ratings of your companions since it can have a major impact on what happens to the over-all story of the game (plus the EXP you get out of the side quests).

Sten also like cake! If you get your hound to look around sometimes he finds chewed up things. Give the cake he finds to Sten and the Pantaloons to Alistair – he’s loves them!
