DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS BLOOD MAGE GUIDE
Blood Mage is one of the most fascinating specializations in Dragon Age: Origins. They play a major role in the plot of the game and you’ll even be more involved with them if you play a mage character. Bloog Magic is forbidden and considered taboo because it taps unnatural demonic rites to use life force instead of lyrium or mana to fuel magic. The spells are definitely powerful but they will drain the Blood Mage as well as his allies.
Blood Mages are hunted by Templars and Mages alike. However, if you do decide to play a Blood Mage, it won’t have any impact whatsoever in the plot of the game unless you specifically reveal it in an NPC dialogue.
This guide is divided into the following sections:
1. Becoming a Blood Mage
2. Blood Mage Attributes
3. Blood Mage Spells
4. Blood Mage Combat Strategy
BECOMING A BLOOD MAGE
Unlocking the Blood Mage specialization is quite easy. Just follow the Redcliffe quest line and eventually you’ll go into the Fade to rescue Connor from a Desire Demon. You’ll find Connor several times in the Fade and each time you’ll face the Desire Demon. After several bouts, you’ll eventually have a dialogue with the Desire Demon herself. She’ll offer you a proposition. She’ll go away for now and leave Connor and she’ll come back long after your time. In exchange to agreeing to her deal, she will teach you the Blood Mage specialization. If you agree, then congratulations! You’ve now unlocked one of the most kick-ass specs in the game.
BLOOD MAGE ATTRIBUTES
The two most important attributes of the Blood Mage are Magic & Constitution. However, you will also need to invest in Will Power since you won’t be using Blood Magic all the time. I’ll explain that later on in the COMBAT STRATEGY section.
MAGIC: You need it because this dictates the damage and potency of your spells. I’m at level 15 now in-game and my current Magic is at 45. I’m planning to pump it up to 50+ and put the rest into CON.
CONSTITUTION: Other than having enough life to survive attacks from enemies, you’ll also be using your HP instead of Mana if you’re on Blood Mage mode. Note that this also applies to non-blood magic spells. If you’ve activated Blood Magic, you’ll spend HP to cast your Fireballs and other normal spells. 20-30 Con should be good enough.
WILL POWER: You won’t be on Blood Magic mode 100% of the time. That being said, you’ll need to invest some points in Will Power so that you won’t run out of fuel for your usual spells. You can completely ignore this though if you have tons of Lyrium potions to spend.
You can pretty much ignore all the other attributes.
BLOOD MAGE SPELLS
Before we tackle the specific spells of the Blood Mage, let me just discuss how everything works. Basically you can’t cast any Blood Magic unless you activate it first. It’s a sustained ability that you have to turn on. After activating it, you now have access to the spells and you will now be using your HP instead of Mana to fuel your magic. To return to using Mana, you have to deactivate Blood Magic. I’ll discuss this more in detail during the COMBAT STRATEGY section.
* Required Level: 7
* Cost: 0
* Upkeep: 0
* Fatigue: 5
* Range: No
* Cooldown (sec): 10
* Area of Effect Radius: 0
For as long as this mode is active, the blood mage sacrifices health to power spells instead of expending mana, but effects that heal the blood mage are much less effective than normal.
* Required Level: 12
* Cost: 0
* Upkeep: 0
* Fatigue: 0
* Range: Yes
* Cooldown (sec): 15
* Area of Effect Radius: 0
The blood mage sucks the life-force from an ally, healing the caster but potentially killing the ally. This healing is not affected by the healing penalty of Blood Magic.
* Required Level: 14
* Cost: 40
* Upkeep: 0
* Fatigue: 0
* Range: Yes
* Cool down (sec): 20
* Area of Effect Radius: 10
The blood of all hostile targets in the area boils within their veins, inflicting severe damage. Targets stand twitching, unable to move unless they pass a physical resistance check. Creatures without blood are immune.
* Required Level: 16
* Cost: 40
* Upkeep: 0
* Fatigue: 0
* Range: Yes
* Cool down (sec): 40
* Area of Effect Radius: 0
The blood mage forcibly controls the target’s blood, making the target an ally of the caster unless it passes a mental resistance check. If the target resists, it instead takes great damage from the manipulation of its blood. Creatures without blood are immune.
BLOOD MAGE COMBAT STRATEGY
First, always remember that you can only use Blood Magic spells on creatures with blood. The good news is that most of the enemies you’ll face have blood, except for the spirits and golems. Demon Spawn have blood so that makes them prime targets for Blood Magic. I can write a full guide on how to use the Blood Mage in combat but I’ll try to keep things concise with three major points that you’ll see below.

1. You don’t have to use Blood Magic all the time
The first two Blood Magic spells are semi-useless, but the last two are just awesome. However, you won’t find yourself using Blood Magic all the time especially if you’re under heavy attack and there’s a chance that your Blood Mage will take damage. If you have Blood Magic on, healing that you get is penalized making it much harder for you to recover. You’ll have to use Blood Sacrifice to heal yourself but that will get HP from one of your partymates, something which might kill them.
If you can afford the time, learn how to activate and de-activate Blood Magic. I personally love using it when there are a lot of monsters clumped up then I deactivate it to use other spells.
2. Use Blood Magic in tandem with your normal spells
The funnest thing about being a Blood Mage is access to the Blood Wound spell. As you saw above, Blood Wound is an AOE stun/DOT spell that can really turn the tide in battle. Temporarily disabling your opponents gives your a lot of time to dish out other spells that can compliment one another. Here’s on of my personal favorites:
- Grease (Makes them fall)
- Fireball or Flame Cone (damage and ignites the oil)
- Blood Wound (Paralyzes and damage over time from the flame cone, grease, and Blood Wound)
I’m sure that there are more creative and fun combos out there. Feel free to leave comment and share what you know and I’ll update this post accordingly with your contribution. Blood Wound coupled with Inferno sounds so juicy.
3. Blood Magic is great Crowd Control
Using Blood Wound also saves your party from damage since the monsters won’t be able to attack since they’re busy twitching themselves to death. However, one of the best and strongest spells in Blood Magic is Blood Control. Remember those annoying Emissaries and Mages that fireballs your party to death? If you use Blood Control, you can actually have them fireball their own team mates instead.
Identify the opponent in the battlefield that’s the biggest threat, and use Blood Control on it if you can. It’s because of this one spell that I actually wanted to have a three-blood mage plus tank set-up in my party. Something like:
Wynne (Spirit Healer/Blood Mage)
Morrigan (Shapeshifter/Blood Mage)
Main PC (Blood Mage/Spirit Healer)
Alistair (Tank)
Anyway, that’s it for the guide. I’ll update this as I get more insights from playing and research online. Hope you find this helpful. Cheers!

I started the game with out the guide at first and went to one place first before the other its a mess but working with it but when I found Conner and tried every thing to get the blood magic from the demon but could not. And is there any way to level up like in final fantasy u could walk around and fight to level up.
Wauks on November 25, 2009
@Nixon: Yeah, stopped playing WOW already.
I think this is the only way to unlock blood mage.
@jonathan: I don’t think there is one, haha. I tried it but I keep getting the dwarf merchant on the world map. Just focus on doing side quests. There are more than enough to make you stronger.
Jonathan on November 26, 2009
Thanks do u know an easier way to get money man it seems like they made it hard to level up or get money.
Wauks on November 26, 2009
@jonathan: Just keep doing the quests. You also might want to have a rogue in the party level up the STEAL skill. You’ll also miss a lot of gold if you don’t unlock and open the various chests scattered in the dungeons.
A great way to save money as well is for you to make your own potions. I’m coming up with a Herbalism guide soon.

If you wanna get spec. Blood Mage:
During the Arl of Redcliffe quest line, if the Warden is a mage, there will be an opportunity to unlock the specialization by choosing to enter the Fade to kill the Desire Demon. You have to use The Warden to enter the fade, no other character can unlock it. When in the Fade, in a conversation with the Desire Demon there will be a possibility to unlock the specialization Blood Mage.
Blood Mage is a really cool specialization. My mage is Blood Mage and Spirit Healer. You can also try Blood Mage and Arcane Warrior (also cool).

@wauks I was going though the game again and got past the urn of ashes by like 5hrs and relised I am still missing a speciliaton and found out it was reaver. so I thought how can I get this without going back 5hrs from one of my saves so there are some cheats I have read and thought what if I went back right before I picked the ashes from the urn and picked them and then pour the blood on them got the reaver from Kolgrim save it and go back to the game I had from the beginning and it worked it took me like 10 mins so if u forget something in the game like this and you save as much as I do just go back to that save get it save then go back to the beginning that you were last on it should be there. This trick also works for the speciliaton books in the stores. Look up http://cheatcc.com/ps3/dragonageoriginscheatscodes.html for some good ones.

hey there:
i have a little problem.
im playing as blood mage+healer i tried each 3 combinations with blood mage e.g. blood mage+healer, blood mage+ shapeshifter, blood mage+arcane warrior but this thing dosent worked with me, now im at level 18 with my blood mage but i cant Cast Blood Wound and Blood Control even those abilities are in my telents. but when i try to click either of them it says something like this ” you need moderate/ modren ability to use this magic” something like that dont remember exectly. as i mentioned i tried every combination but it never worked for me and now im keep playing without using those two magics :s.
(already finished as Rough and warrior.but enjoying mage alot).
please any advise?
