If you ask me what my dream gaming company is, that’s Blizzard. I would love to work for the leading gaming company in the world. Anyway, I was going through their job opportunities page when I saw an opening for a Lead 3D Designer in the Diablo Team. Does this mean that Diablo 3 is finally in the works? We all know that after World of Warcraft is Starcraft II… and now… Diablo 3?
Here’s the quote of the job description from the Blizzard website:
Lead 3D Level Designer
The team behind Diablo I and II is looking for a skilled lead 3D level designer with experience building levels using Maya or other similar 3D level building tools. The ideal candidate has experience creating levels in a senior or lead role on a shipped game. We would also like for this candidate to have excellent analytical understanding of competitive online play with various Blizzard Entertainment games and mods (real-time strategy, World of Warcraft, Defense of the Ancients, etc.). The lead level designer needs to be able to create fun and interesting environments that look and play great while managing and mentoring a team of additional level designers. Skills in scripting or general 3D modeling/texturing are preferred.
Blizzard Entertainment offers a fun, creative, and technically rewarding environment with excellent compensation and a full range of benefits.
Requirements
- 5+ years experience creating levels in Maya or other 3D level editors
- Ability to model interesting architecture and environments in 3D
- Ability to script interesting cinematic sequences using in-game art
- Great sense for what makes a game or level fun to play
- Passion for games
- Ability to work well in a team environment
- Pluses- Online play experience with various Blizzard Entertainment games and mods (real-time strategy, World of Warcraft, Defense of the Ancients, etc.).
- Strong foundation in the traditional arts, including but not limited to figure drawing and environmental and/or architectural illustration
- Applicants must include a map submission with the application. If you have worked on maps in published products, you may submit the names of the levels you worked on with your resume. You may submit 1-3 maps from any game for review.
- Please include a breakdown for each level that describes what you did (layout, progression, inspiration, intention, modeling, textures, lighting, triggers, etc.).Please send the level(s) as well as a cover letter, resume, and salary history in separate Word format documents to resumes@blizzard.com.
No calls or follow-up emails, please. This is a full-time position in Irvine, California.
Let me clarify that I’m not gunning for this job – I’m no game designer, hehe. I’m just pointing out the possibility of Diablo 3. I’m sure that a lot of you guys were able to experience the ruthless hacking and slashing in the two Diablo games that Blizzard released several years ago. I remember being addicted to that game to the point that I would really do overnighters just to level my Barbarian.
