Desperate Housewives Insults Filipino Doctors
Desperate Housewives, a multi-awarded and high rating show at ABC, recently insulted the integrity and dignity of the Filipino doctor. Teri Hatcher’s character goes to a doctor to ask why her menstrual cycle was off for the past few months. Before the doctor can even start his check-up, Teri Hatcher blurts out “Can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.” Seriously - what the f*ck is up with the script writters of that show? Don’t they know that a Filipino was included in the top 10 nurses list in America? Don’t they know that the Filipino nurse is one of the most highly sought worker in not just USA, but also in other countries? This is one of the most racist and insulting things I’ve heard, and I personally find this offensive because I have a lot of doctor and nurse friends who are now based in the US.

More thoughts and a link to the video of the controversial scene after the jump.
I’m not just the only guy pissed at this. If you search google and even if you check other blogs by Filipinos, you’ll see that there’s a snowballing outrage. If you also check the daily broadsheets today, even Malacanang and various government and professional organizations are asking the producers of the show for an official apology.
I hope that you guys understand why there are a lot of people getting angry over this issue. Thousands of high caliber nurses and doctors leave our country to go to the US every year. What do they get for their trouble? They get insulted and maligned by a TV show that really doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
Here’s a link to the scene which was posted on Youtube. Watch it for yourself and feel free to share your thoughts here.

it’s good na magreact tayo on issues like this pero come to think of it, hindi ba tayo rin ang gumagawa minsan ng dahilan para pagdudahan ang kakayahan natin? one concrete example is the nursing exam leakage last yr. you know the details already. kaya nga from that starting point nagiba cguro ang perception sa atin ng taga ibang bansa

Can I daresay BOYCOT? Lets not send any nurses or doctors over there for a year. Lets see how they do without the doctors holding diplomas from the philippines. On a lighter side, I do find the scene a little funny since it just shows how insecure the american doctors and nurses are of their filipino counterparts taking over. hehehe

“Can I check your diploma? I want to make sure it’s not from some ghetto high school in the Bronx, nigger/cracker”. Just take comfort in the fact that most Americans only finished high school XD

@Boky
ur correct dude! even in Call Center Industry, Different companies from US outsource here in the Philippines because Filipinos are more polite than Americans and take note, many Filipinos who works in a Call Center are much better because they are at least in college level and some are college graduates unlike in US, most of the agents their didn’t reach college and didn’t graduated from High School so to make the story short … most americans are ill mannered >.

lol…Filipinos nowadays know how to react…and i’m quite happy about that…it just proves that we are on the way to world domination!!! kidding….anyways, I think they should really apologize kasi nga for the reasons that most of USA’s line of professionals have been replaced by Filipinos. tsaka Filipinos are really more passionate and even give real Health Care giving with TLC. I myself, as a student-nurse have an innate nature that tells me to care for thes sick with passion and with TLC. the school, race or country a professional belongs doesn’t reveal the quality of his/her service, it depends upon the present situation.

Hatcher’s character said:
“Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Because I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
Alec Mapa- actor who has a recurring role in the series told to the reporter:“It’s unfortunate that the Philippines was used as a punch line. My family is filled with doctors and medical professionals. I know first hand from them, that the medical schools in the Philippines are top notch.â€
Joke lng pala yun na walang kwenta ang medical course dito sa schools sa pilipinas stated here:
The remarks “served to create racial stereotypes, thereby tainting unnecessarily the excellent record of Filipino health care professionals all over the world,†she said in her letter.
ganun pala yun. ang gara nila masyado noh? dapat lng iban na yang show n yan dito sa pinas. ngayun tumitiklop sila? hays… kakahiya sila

Geez get over it.. i am filipino and i found no offense to it. All those who are up in arms either are way too sensitve or just bored.
The facts are yes the filipinos make up a good size in the health care industry in the US, but be honest here.. if they are so talented why not utilze that talent back in the Philippines instead of immediately trying to go abroad to practice your skills. So many in the petition are so proud to be pinoy but I’ll bet you over 1/3 of them who signed left the Philippines to work. so much for filipino pride. You don’t see american doctors in milllions going abroad to practice.. they stay home and help their nation. Bottom line is that filipinos need to get over it. Devote more time with petitions to GMA and all politicians to find a viable way to keep their greatest resourse(its people)home instead of looking outside the country. I don’t see a petition for that. The comment that filipinos are all over the world is not a postive thing.. it just says that many leave to work elsewhere.. that is sad.
