    smart-bro-bayantel-dsl-pldt-dsl-globe-dsl

I’ve had 3 different DSL Service Providers in the past 4 years. I want to take this opportunity to give an objective and unbiased review on the experiences I’ve had with all 3. Hopefully this will help you guys when you make your decision to get your own broadband, be it for gaming, e-mail, downloading, or surfing. For this article, I’ll write about my experiences with Bayantel DSL, SMART Bro, and PLDT MyDSL. Check them all out after the break.

SMART Bro: This was my first internet connection outside of dial-up. I had this hooked up when I was still living in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City. In all honesty, I had little problems when the DSL was running. Download speeds were pretty stable and I only experienced lag when I was playing Fly for Fun. It actually ran pretty well with RF Online. For 900+ bucks monthly, the connection was pretty okay back then. My only problem with SMART Bro was when the connection would go down. The customer service reps would say that it would take around 1-2 days for their technical team to drop by to fix it. However, there were several instances when it took the technicians more than 1 week before they come over to fix the antenna. Because of the intermittent connection, I decided to cancel my subscription to SMART Bro after 1 year (contract).

SMART Bro Plug-it: I then moved on to SMART Bro Plug-it. I needed mobile internet because I’m always on the move and it helps a lot with my consultancy work. I bought the USB Modem for P3,800 I think. It kinda makes me sad when I see that the prices have dropped all the way down to P1,800. Anyway, regarding the connection, it really depends on location. There were instances that the speed was really fast to the point that I could actually play World of Warcraft without any hassle. But there were instances that I couldn’t even get a signal at all. From experience, it’s kinda fast in Makati and Tomas Morato, but very erratic in the Katipunan area. By the way, forget about downloading… it takes forever. I still have this with me since it allows me to go online wherever. It’s pretty much for emergency use like: waiting for the girlfriend while she’s shopping, need to send an urgent e-mail, bored to death and I want to Facebook while on the road, etc.

Bayantel DSL: I got Bayantel while I was living somewhere along Katipunan. First, let me just say that they provide the most hassle free service. I called their hot line on Monday, and their agent went by to get my requirements Tuesday. Internet was installed Wednesday. That’s insanely fast! Plus, I didn’t have to go to their service centers at all. I got the 2.5MBPS package which costs around P2699. Initially I had problems with the connection since the Speed Test just registered around 1.1 – 1.2MBPS. However, after making 1 call, they fixed it and I got 2MBPS – 2.4MBPS constantly. If ever I would have problems with the connection, it would get fixed within a day. If they say that the technician would drop by soon, they really mean it. There was one instance that my connection was on and off. I called in the morning, and the guy actually arrived in the afternoon to fix it. Amazing. My only concern with Bayantel is that around 11PM-12AM, the connection is really on and off. Dunno why. Rest of the day though it’s pretty much stable.

PLDT MyDSL: I just moved to Greenhills a few weeks ago and I initially wanted to just get Bayantel because of the convenience. Unfortunately they weren’t servicing the area yet. I had to decide between PLDT MyDSL and Globe Broadband. Since I work for the PLDT Group, I thought of just going for PLDT. Okay, I don’t know if I’ll get into trouble for writing this but… man. I applied for a connection more than 3 weeks ago and I still haven’t gotten any feedback on when they will install! I’ve been calling the contractor that signed me up and she’s no help at all. In fact, she told me to be the one to follow up by calling 171. I have no idea when I’ll get a call telling me that the technician will drop by. That’s the main reason why I haven’t been able to blog regularly because I don’t have connection at home. I’m seriously thinking of going for Globe Broadband if I still don’t get any feedback by tomorrow.

So that sums up my entire DSL experience. If you guys want to share yours, please go ahead and leave a comment. We can use this thread as some sort of a feedback mechanism so we’re all informed before we subscribe. Cheers everyone!

yes it is very confusing. it seems na ung mga quality na gusto mo e wala sa isang connection lang. I’m using smartbro wireless prepaid sa dorm and PLDT nman sa bhay. I dunno but wala nman ako problem sa knila so far. actually, may times na mas gusto ko pa gmitin ung prepaid ko kesa sa dsl.

    • japran on July 17, 2009

      Thanks for the review.
Don’t get sunbroadband. It’s the worst, waste of money, ever spent/invested on an internet service. Listen to Jojo Torres.

    • jeiann on July 17, 2009

pag kasi dsl maraming maintenance ekek, mraming nagiging prob. pag wireless signal lang problema mo. pag prepaid, pag walang gmit wlang bawas. mas tipid tlga.

    • kaysy on July 17, 2009

i agree with jojo and japran. I thought mabilis ang sun kc nga ala pa msayado kaagaw sa bandwidth. pero damn, waste of money lang tlga xa. I switched to smart bro prepaid at so far, eto ung pinaka matinong ngamit ko.

Three Weeks na kaming walang internet.Globe BroadBand service sucks big time.Imagine, wala man lang magfollow up or mag offer ng temporary solution.I feel like”sorry ka na lang, refund na lang this month” grabe,no choice.1 day na walang connection na pakahirap na pag may online work ka eh.3 weeks pa.antagal pa sumagot ng csr nila, minsan diretso busy na.at masakit, tinatanung ko sila ano sira na inaabut ng 3 weeks para ayusin,e walang mabigay.sabi ng csr nila, within 24-48 hours daw maayos..that was 3 weeks ago,mga sinungaling.eto pa ang pinaka, ngayon pa sila nagrelease ng globe broadband commercial na napaka yabang ng dating,”this is your future” ang statement…wow, kung ganito future ko with Globe, natatakot ako for my online business.kakahiya kayo.currently applying for bayandsl,so far friendly at mabilis ang csr, at sila pupunta sayo next day for the application.ayos ba?

PLDT really sucks. I’ve been a subscriber of PLDT small biz lite for a year and a half for my small business. There was a time when I lost my connection for 3 days and I started reporting to PLDT careless support for immediate action, but their careless support keeps on telling me to check the router, check the modem, blah blah blah, but still no connection. Then, they told me that a technician will be dropping by after a day or two to check the lines. Finally! after a bloody 4 days wasted just calling their tech supportless. When the technician finally came after 4 days prior to my last call, he started checking my computer to diagnose the problem. I’ve told him countless times, to check the lines because I’ve already made all the troubleshooting of network problems the whole 6 days that I don’t have a single spark of hope for having a connection again. I don’t know if he was deaf or something, but after 30 minutes wasted on sitting there looking at my monitor just doing what I’ve already done, he came out to check the lines outside. And then he came back in just to tell me that the wire for my dsl was actually cut from the main line. So there was the problem, after just sitting there trying to solve the network problem for 30 minutes. Then he made the written report, so that their contractor would know what to do. What the hell! I thought that he was the one who’s going to repair my line. After asking a few neighbors, I was informed that a stupid cable company guy actually cut the lines because he thought that it was an illegal cable TV connection… hello?? the wire size of cable TV is different from phone cables. PLDT’s contractor came just the day after to fix my line, and i was back in business. Then I called 171 to report that my line was fixed and they told me to call their billing section for the payment adjustment. My bill for the month was actually adjusted to Php 1,700, because of the inconvenience that I encountered. But after that, when my next bill came, I don’t know what the hell happened, it sky-rocketed to 7K+ and had a balance for 1 month. My plan was small biz lite, and i was supposed to be paying Php 5,800/month. What the hell are they trying to pull? Yeah, they adjusted it for a month because of the damages, but after that, they adjusted it again and added a few extras on the bill. It’s like I’m going to pay 3x for my inconvenience. I called the billing section and they explained what the hell happened, they f***ing overlooked the report and adjustment, so they billed me like 3 months of inconvenient usage. I refused to pay the balance, and paid only the recent bill. And then after that, came the time that I missed a billing statement, because I haven’t received any. My dsl was disconnected due to an outstanding balance of 2 months. So I settled my 1 month balance just to have a connection again. And then March 2009 came, I was sabotaged by my neighbor from the apartment unit I was renting. They didn’t give me my billing statement until May 2009. I frequently asked them about my billing statement but they always answer that they don’t have it. When I haven’t received any billing statement, I expected that my dsl connection would be disconnected on the month of April. So I decided to move from that apartment to my home, so that I won’t be paying any rent to lessen the expenses. I requested the landlady to send me my billing statement if ever that they come across it. Guess what, they handed me the bill after I told her that. It was 3 sealed envelopes from PLDT. Now here’s the problem with PLDT, my DSL connection is supposed to be out of service by the time of April, because of the past 1 month balance + the bill for March. It’s 3 months of unpaid bill. I’ve studied my billing statements and never saw a watermark of notice of disconnection. The billing statements keeps on coming until last month and received a new billing statement with the notice of disconnection. I tried to call my landline on that apartment, and it still rings! It was supposed to be out service by April 16. Now I have no choice but to settle the balance of that 6 months of unused DSL connection.

Techsupport for globe is useless and unprofessional. Frontline agents where you call to report internet connection issues are best script readers.

I applied for wired globed broadband last July 1. It was installed last July 13. During installation I noticed the tech guy can’t setup my laptop to connect to the internet so he called his supervisor to lend him the laptop to test the connection. I can’t believe he advised me to reformat my laptop, OMG, that was the worst advise i got from a “tech guy”. Well, luckily I managed to setup my laptop later. Of course they established the connection using their laptop but it was only when they went out when I noticed the splices of wires without any protective insulation. That was haphazardly done just to extend the length of the wire.

Now, this is the most frustrating part. The following day, I lost internet connection, that was July 14 and I reported it to globe hotline in the evening the same day. I thought I was lucky to have the techguy the following day July 15 who went to my house to check the connection and he arrived just before 12noon. He tried to tinker using my laptop and even tried several accounts to reconnect with internet but to no avail. He said he needed to reset their box from the source coz at my end DSL and LAN connection have no problem so that’s the only thing to do for it to work and it won’t take him long so he promised to be back very shortly. He went out around 12.30pm so I waited. I thought he’ll come late for he also needed to take his lunch. To my dismay it was already 5pm but he didn’t show up not even a call from him. Probably he was already kidnapped by irate globe broadband customers. And would you believe until now no call from the tech guys, the agents keep saying “ongoing restoration”. Techguys are just sleeping or they need to be bribed? That makes them useless and unprofessional.

I made several calls to follow-up (as of this writing got no response from the techguys). Another most frustrating and irritating part but I tried to be sober when I talk to them. So, as I’ve said their globe call center agents are best script readers and “most polite by word only”. They’ll gonna read the intro, get info from you then read the script that says like “…

nafind out na nila na may problema at inaayos pa nila

      8. is there anything else pa po?

That’s it. Just to let you know until now, I haven’t got response from the allegedly “support group” that the agents are talking about everytime I call.

And too bad, I’m locked-in with the account for 12 months.

So everyone, is there other internet provider that we can trust and can satisfy us in return for our hard-earned money?

      *** MYDESTINY REVIEW ***

mydestiny – I’m in Pasay area and it sucks! So much down time and so slow even at 2 am in the morning?!?!
      – Unprofessional technicians. Whenever they come to my house to fix something, they always ask for “ma’am pang merienda naman po” and they only accept cash!!! Grabe dba?!
      – Agent’s know only to say “Pa-hard restart nlng po” even I told them I done that several times already

smartbro – My cousin in Calamba Laguna uses this one and I’ve tried it many times and so far not as headache as mydestiny. The only complain I have with them is everytime a new computer is plugged in it needs to go to the activation page. And that activation page is most of the time giving error thus we can’t switch the computer.

    • nhorie on August 8, 2009

    • bert on August 8, 2009

untattoed, we have exactly the same problem w/ globe. mine worked for only about 2 weeks then stopped july 7 and up to now no word yet from them. they will say ‘for immediate action’, pero hanggang salita lang. worse we were billed initially for 2 mos. now i’m also locked to a 12 mos. contract. grabe! dapat may isang edition ng ‘XXX’ sa channel 2 o kaya IMBESTIGADOR sa 7 para d2 sa mga problema natin.

    • bert on August 8, 2009

      @nhorie,
ur ryt it depends on d location, but Globe must warn subscribers if location has a bad connection. Thing is, my connection worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, very fast 1mb for 6 users. then it just died kasama yung service and everything with it. i work in IT and the technicians were not actually sure about what they were doing.

    • ian on August 22, 2009

During the 1st week of June to 1st week of July our internet connection has been horrible 12hrs. connected 12hrs. disconnected. I’ve been calling your technical support everyday!!! What they told me is that globe has an outage in our area. I bear with globe for almost 1 1/2 month then here comes my July-August bill. I was late in paying the 995Php for 2days, then i lost my connection, reason globe temporarily disconnected my internet connection due to late payment!!! MAHIYA NAMAN KAYO

How do i know n wlang problema s PC ko i tried my friends Laptop d2 s akin ayus ganun din 670kbps but before that i already tried to test it s knila 5 cnsctve test the result is 1.04mbps the slowest 1.15 ang fastest result e 1mbps lng ang subscrptn nya. and also i brought my pc to his place (across the street lng nmn e) i got same result 1.04mbps the lowest and 1.20mbps ang fastest. Parang impossible no pero 22o.

WARNING: GLOBE SUCKS!!! So don’t even think of subscribing! I thought I was doing good with Globe Broadband until I got hooked with Facebook applications.. grabe almost all apps won’t freakin load! Kala ko congested lang ang facebook pero when I got myself a Smart Plug-it.. I am able to play facebook apps with no hassle! So I called Globe customer service to report this issue. Wow.. like everyone has mentioned here.. isisisi pa nila sa computer mo ang problema! I told them if it’s able to load using a Smart Plug-it then obviously my flashplayer is up to date and definitely not the problem here. Ang sagot sakin is: HINDI KO NA PO ALAM BASTA YUNG SOFTWARE NYO NA ANG MAY PROBLEMA. I was super irritated by him that I ask him to just quit his job since hindi naman nya alam pinagsasabi nya. Anyway.. MORAL OF THE STORY IS: NEVER EVER SIGN UP FOR GLOBE BROADBAND! Good thing I’m done with my contract and I’m now on a hunt for a better service provider. SMART PLUG-IT ROCKS kaya nga lang prepaid ako so medyo katamad paload minsan. However, connection and service wise.. ayos!!! Definitely recommended ko SMART BRO PLUG IT! :)

    • Ronin on October 14, 2009

I agree with PinkySwear, Globe Broadband really Sucks!!! Customer service Reps doesn’t really know what they are saying. They are just reading what ever script they have on their screen. After the typhoon Ondoy, my dsl connection is gone. Everyday since then i’ve been calling the Customer Service. Palagi nila sinasabi na my on-going system restoration ek ekm at yung mga service technician nila ay nasa site daw to fix the problem.

Humahataw nmn kahet papano… Ano ba tlga mas matinong broadband?

    • Superfrustated on December 3, 2009

They should all cope up with the new technology now… They should not proclaim themselves as the fastest broadband in town. Fastest to get my money cguro pwede pa. Im so frustrated!

    • PLDT DSL SUCKS on December 15, 2009

      PLDT DSL is a fraud.

In October, Internet was out for THREE WEEKS! I called almost everyday, pleading for them to fix it. AND they had the audacity to charge me for the three weeks that I didn’t have internet for. When I called to ask for a rebate, they said that it was subject for approval and that it MAY reflect in the next bill. It did not reflect. I called again and they said again that it may reflect in the next bill. Now its December, I’ve had intermittent internet for the past two weeks. When I say intermittent, I mean 4 days off, one afternoon on. I called to report it, every single day to no avail. They keep saying that they’ll send someone or that they’ll call back, but they never do. I asked if they would give me a rebate and they said that the bill would have to come out first before I could report that they charged me for days that I didn’t have internet. If you have the option not to get PLDT, just don’t do it. Its not worth the hassle. PLDT DSL is a fraud. They charge you for services that they do not provide.

globe broadband really sucks! any other ISP you can recommend??? makati area

    • lia on December 25, 2009

i’m from the cavite area. and it’s true what you say about PLDT DSL. they did take quite some time for the installation to go through. i think it was 3 weeks for me. but after that, i didn’t really have a problem on slow connections. pldt dsl is pretty fast. download time is great for songs and movie torrents but i guess it really depends on how many peers you’re downloading from.

    • ArtP on December 30, 2009

PLDT is the Bill Gates of PI. so they dont give a **** about how you feel about customer service, you’re just drop in the bucket
Globe is the ifone and ?, who cares I still have most the businesses elite connections
Smart, PLDT is my big BRO

pldt is still the least negative among ISPs. been using pldt dsl in Laguna, Quezon City and Nueva Ecija for internet cafes. yes, we do have problems, but when solved… vhrrrroooommm… fast internet.

experienced more than six months without turning off the modem/router with no problems.

      4mbps@smallbizlite package… fast video streaming and downloading… up to 300+ kilobytes/second…

      sarap forn…
