Broadband DSL Rants and Raves

smart-bro-bayantel-dsl-pldt-dsl-globe-dsl

I’ve had 3 different DSL Service Providers in the past 4 years. I want to take this opportunity to give an objective and unbiased review on the experiences I’ve had with all 3. Hopefully this will help you guys when you make your decision to get your own broadband, be it for gaming, e-mail, downloading, or surfing. For this article, I’ll write about my experiences with Bayantel DSL, SMART Bro, and PLDT MyDSL. Check them all out after the break.

SMART Bro: This was my first internet connection outside of dial-up. I had this hooked up when I was still living in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City. In all honesty, I had little problems when the DSL was running. Download speeds were pretty stable and I only experienced lag when I was playing Fly for Fun. It actually ran pretty well with RF Online. For 900+ bucks monthly, the connection was pretty okay back then. My only problem with SMART Bro was when the connection would go down. The customer service reps would say that it would take around 1-2 days for their technical team to drop by to fix it. However, there were several instances when it took the technicians more than 1 week before they come over to fix the antenna. Because of the intermittent connection, I decided to cancel my subscription to SMART Bro after 1 year (contract).

SMART Bro Plug-it: I then moved on to SMART Bro Plug-it. I needed mobile internet because I’m always on the move and it helps a lot with my consultancy work. I bought the USB Modem for P3,800 I think. It kinda makes me sad when I see that the prices have dropped all the way down to P1,800. Anyway, regarding the connection, it really depends on location. There were instances that the speed was really fast to the point that I could actually play World of Warcraft without any hassle. But there were instances that I couldn’t even get a signal at all. From experience, it’s kinda fast in Makati and Tomas Morato, but very erratic in the Katipunan area. By the way, forget about downloading… it takes forever. I still have this with me since it allows me to go online wherever. It’s pretty much for emergency use like: waiting for the girlfriend while she’s shopping, need to send an urgent e-mail, bored to death and I want to Facebook while on the road, etc.

Bayantel DSL: I got Bayantel while I was living somewhere along Katipunan. First, let me just say that they provide the most hassle free service. I called their hot line on Monday, and their agent went by to get my requirements Tuesday. Internet was installed Wednesday. That’s insanely fast! Plus, I didn’t have to go to their service centers at all. I got the 2.5MBPS package which costs around P2699. Initially I had problems with the connection since the Speed Test just registered around 1.1 – 1.2MBPS. However, after making 1 call, they fixed it and I got 2MBPS – 2.4MBPS constantly. If ever I would have problems with the connection, it would get fixed within a day. If they say that the technician would drop by soon, they really mean it. There was one instance that my connection was on and off. I called in the morning, and the guy actually arrived in the afternoon to fix it. Amazing. My only concern with Bayantel is that around 11PM-12AM, the connection is really on and off. Dunno why. Rest of the day though it’s pretty much stable.

PLDT MyDSL: I just moved to Greenhills a few weeks ago and I initially wanted to just get Bayantel because of the convenience. Unfortunately they weren’t servicing the area yet. I had to decide between PLDT MyDSL and Globe Broadband. Since I work for the PLDT Group, I thought of just going for PLDT. Okay, I don’t know if I’ll get into trouble for writing this but… man. I applied for a connection more than 3 weeks ago and I still haven’t gotten any feedback on when they will install! I’ve been calling the contractor that signed me up and she’s no help at all. In fact, she told me to be the one to follow up by calling 171. I have no idea when I’ll get a call telling me that the technician will drop by. That’s the main reason why I haven’t been able to blog regularly because I don’t have connection at home. I’m seriously thinking of going for Globe Broadband if I still don’t get any feedback by tomorrow.

So that sums up my entire DSL experience. If you guys want to share yours, please go ahead and leave a comment. We can use this thread as some sort of a feedback mechanism so we’re all informed before we subscribe. Cheers everyone!

globe broadband has the best costumer service in all. it happened one time nung nagtotopak connection namin.

  2. geoffrey says:

thx sir/mam… this was really helpful^_^ good job…

  3. nessy says:

how ironic that you are working in the PLDT group. anyway i experienced the same hassles too, lately i have applied for a PLDT DSL connection and i already talked to the agents here and even emailed the customer service of PLDT, still after almost 1 month (malapit na mag-two months!!!) wala pa din kaming connection. i was cancelling my application already and yet they keep on telling me “pasensya na po!” hello?! lahat naman ng tao nauubos din ang pasensya, i already paid the 1600 fee, didn’t get my receipt and my connection na sabi ni la within 2-3 weeks daw! what a waste of my time

  4. rain says:

haha, ganun nga talaga technicians ng globe. Minsan hindi sila loyal s company nila kapag naging maganda ang pag welcome u s kanila. :-)

  5. Browse N Drowse says:

I wanted to install Smart Bro Share It in the past but when I was searching the Web for reviews about Smart Bro, I found this link: The reason behind SmartBro’s lockin period. It really opened my eyes. That’s why I hope to spread this link so that others might also see. I hope you will spread it too.

  6. Bryle says:

Alam nyu dito sa cebu ang GlobeDsl ang pinaka mahina or mabagal mag response ng mga technical group nila almost a month or two para ma actionan ang mga request nyu eh ako nga almost a month na wala parin ang request namin for transfer of location eh 4 houses lang ang pagitan. if aabot pa ang line ako nalang sana mag transfer…eh…..

  7. nadal says:

M using bayantel plan 999 now, maganda sya mabilis, especially pag 10pm-10am. mabilis action ng service nila, tapos lahat libre,

Sana may magreply about d2 thnx.

(Matagal tagla magpaapply sa pldt, tumawag ako sabi it takes months)

  8. raquel says:

  9. ponpon says:

I got the Smartbro plug in as a freebie when i bought my laptop late last year. I thought I got a good deal because at that time,it costs around 1K+ . But that’s what I thought. Smart would only eat up all my credits and more often, i’d only get maximum speed of about 50kbps or less, page won’t load and sometimes can’t even connect. I would load up 100pesos and I can only enjoy about 30min online but that means intermittent connection. I only used it for a week or two and after that, it’s already as good as trash.
This thread really helped me a lot since I’m planning to get a broadband connection at home and right now, I’ve already made my decision. You rock!

  10. Rizzie says:

    Fab info!

I was once a Globe broadband subscriber, the speed is fine but it disconnects like 4-5 times a day. So imagine how often I call their help line to reset my connection.

Just purchased a new laptop and I decided to get BAYANBroadband and with your blog, I think I will really go for it. You said it well when it comes to their services. Thanks again for sharing your DSL experiences. Ooops, about PLDT, hell yea it took ages before they answer a customer query. PLDT management should know about your story not because your mad how slow they are but for them to work their ass on it!

    Cheers!

  11. michael says:

  13. cire says:

I guess you have been all looking and trying to know which best provider can provide best broadband /internet service….. well i for one had my worse experiences with these provider such as smart bro, bayantel & lately tattoo broadband. Shall i say the worse … smart bro company policies says once you subcribe you are 24 months lock-in as subscriber but hell, they could not do anything when i wrote them a complaint about their poor connection. From day 1 up 3rd weekof subscription i ended thier service with an agreement of not paying the remaining months.
Bayantel 2yrs of good service but on 2008 January 13 up to January 2009 i almost gave up on that particular time hasle, intermitent, connect and reconnect have been most common words for me, most shift managers on bayantel knows me because of my french word “bad words” during customer service call eventually they end up giving 8 months rebates but sometime Feb 2010 i decided to cut them off because their facility are already overloaded according toshift managers and began to slow down their internet however changing or adding bandwith won’t make any differrence.
April 2010 Tattobrodband this one call it USB hypetension ‘coz it almost gave me a heart attack at first i have a normal and without a doubt hassle free but after 1 month and a half intermittent problem occured super too slow its like using kbps and not MBPS the only mistakes i have is that i didn’t listen to my friend, signal service is important bad thing they do not have any signal testing before subscription too bad for me.

Still searching for good broadband WI-Tribe does have testing ground checking before subscription their tech people are pretty honest after checking area they disagree to install their broadband due to small signal which eventually will cause problem later on.

So im in the process of checking the ff:

    INFOCOM 6727201
    MY DESTINY INTERNET 8419393
    SKY INTERNET 411 2000
    WI-TRIBE 3187423

Whydon’t you try the above company you may ask them 1st to check your placeif there is a good signal before deciding well good luck to all!

  14. rengen says:

  15. sherry says:

I have an internet cafe. I am at my wits end now. I am thinking of changing my ISP. PLDT has a very poor quality of service. It will take weeks, months, numerous calls, numerous emails before any problem will be taken cared off. Not only this, I have ask for rebates for the times of non-delivery of internet service, would you believe that they haven’t given rebates yet to me for the year 2008? Last Ondoy, it took a month before PLDT reconnected my internet, Bayantel took only 1 week. From experience, Bayantel respond time to technical problems is fast. It will take 1 call only. Installation is the same…. it’s fast for Bayantel. Thanks for the information I got from all of you. It further confirmed my choice.

  16. cynthia reyes says:

To hell with PLDT…their service sucks…I’ve already applied for My DSl connection and its been a month now and still no technician nor any personnel (kahit janitor!) helped us. thanks to this blog i’ll be canceling my application tomorrow and go straight to bayan Tel.
I’ve been calling and talking to 5 managers already…customer service is poor…do anyone know how we can raise our concerns to Board of directors of PLDT?

  17. airwin says:

  18. ttge says:

Dont don’t go gor globe broadband!! lousy service.. Our phone and internet has been down for three weeks already and they can’t even committ when they can resume service.. System Enhancement daw? just learned that cause it the road widening in pasig.. they gve a target date of June 9 to restore tapos ngayon when we called they cannot say when it will be restored.. During Ondoy, sila yung pinaka matagal magrestore ng service.. Pldt was able to restore in a week Sky was able to do so in 2 weeks.. Globe took them more than a month.. Stick to PLDt kahit bumabagal at least may service.. and response time of Globe is sosososos00000 poor!

  19. merv says:

globe broadband subscriber ako., normally pag umulan nawawalan ng net.,about an hour or (depende sa lakas ng ulan)siya mawawala., service naman pag nagkasabay sabay ang problema sa ibat ibang location inaabot ng 3 days bago sila makapunta., pero madalas pag tumatawag kame kinabukasan dumadating sila at inaayos kagad., during ondoy naman nawalan lang kame ng net at phone connection about 4 hours then nagkaroon din medyo mabagal lang., kinabukasan back to normal na connection., yung connection ko nakukuha ko naman ng tama.. sobra pa nga madalas.,

  20. arvs says:

i think weder weder lang yan eh.

Nagsubscribe ako, that was March 2009. But the real problem started when we transferred to Imus, Cavite. Wala pang signal ang Sun Broadband sa area namin that time, that was December 2009. Nang kausapin ko ang customer care about this, sabi mga March 2010 magkakaroon na ng signal. So I decided to cut the line permanently. Kaso hindi ko agad naasikaso till the next billing came up and hindi ko agad nabayaran. After a week ng due date natemporarily cut ang broadband namin. So, I talked personally with their staff and reiterated my decision to permanently terminate my subscription. But I asked them if it is ok to pay it later kasi that time I was prioritizing my expenses, anyway my broadband was temporarily disconnected naman. So I talked again with their staff, this time wala na yung dati kong nakausap. Letse nila!

i’ve been on my pldt dsl for 4 years damn! ang panget ng service laging putol linya at sobrang bagal ng internet i already applied 1995 which is actually 2mbps connection but what i got is 600-800 kbps which is the price of 999 i’ve been calling them up every week but still no solution at all ngayon one week na wala pa din ako connection mabilis ba yta itong sun wireless ko…im quitting pldt now so probably bayantel is my choice gusto ko sana skyinternet pero tiil now wala pa ung line sa lugar nmin…i thought ako lang nakaka exprience ng ganito sa pldt

  23. imshy says:

    WAG KAYONG MAG SMARTBRO!!!

  24. jouie says:

    Hey.

Nakabayantel ako now. In simple words, we are getting what we pay for. In twenty-four hours, they’re here.”Tako sa rebate”? Maniwala kayo, nung cnabi nilang nag-upgrade from 768KBPS to 1MBPS, they really mean it! Conclution, they have the best customer service response time in this country, having a stable connection is still debatable/questionable,but their advertized speed is fair enough!

  25. Dev says:

I agree with the comment above mine. I’ve tried Sky, PLDT (PaLa-DC!), Sun, and Bayantel is indeed king when it comes to speed. On the other hand, reliability is really lacking. The connection seems to get intermittent during peek hours. This isn’t really much of a problem when browsing, but you’ll really feel the pain when playing online games.

  26. Anthony says:

Thnx for this blog!! im going to try bayantel :D

  27. Joseph says:

  29. rolandc says:

Don’t go for globe.. There service is really sucks..There connection is not dependable.. Intermittent connection, stupid connection, poor technician, and even taking a week or 2 before the technician comes in.. They are always saying that we are having a problem with the facility where my cable connected to. June 9 2010 i encountered a worst nightmare. I called globe Customer Service and it takes 3 weeks before the technician fix the problem., After 4 days here we go again, same issue, problem again. I called them again and it takes one week before it was fixed,. after the restoration of our internet we do getting a really stupid slow connection. I called up again and in the next day the technician drop by and you what happened? Gosh!! Na highblood ako coz the technician insisting that i am only paying for 384kbps.. what..? I even show him tht SOA to proved that i signed up for 1mpbs. Stupid technician.. The technician agreed he promise that he will come back tomorrow to fix it. and in the end, fucking technician called up that if its ok to re-sked it.. Huwatt..?!! Oh my god..!! i was really really upset.. and until now we don’t have internet connection..

Tnx to this blog, i decided to go for BAYANTEL…

  30. AJ says:

PLDT dito sa Baguio City ganun din, it takes years to complete their services.

  31. Micoric says:

FYI, SmartBRO and GLobeBroadband are not DSL. they are Broadband, not DSL..

  32. Em says:

Hi! We applied for PLDT myDSL two months ago, after nearly three weeks of calls and follow ups they delivered the modem but still no internet connection so we’re stuck to dial-up connections. Last week, an agent from PLDT went here and retrieved the modem, saying they they were sorry because there is no DSL line in our place. So ganun na lang?! After two months of waiting wala din nangyari. They should’ve said it sooner.

If we subscribe to their DSL, diba dapat may Bayantel phone? Pano un may PLDT phone na kami? Stupid PLDT! The only reason we decided to have a phone is because of myDSL. Pahelp naman po sa problem namin. Thanks!

  33. Archie says:

Try nyo MyDestiny..cable broadband..so more capacity ang kaya since coax cable not telephone copper wire.

  34. Jon says:

Globe customer service sucks, big time. They don’t even know that word “Intermittent”.

  35. Mark Louie says:

I’m using PLDT mydsl lan connection, plan 1299. It took the ten days to deliver the modem and install the connection. But before that, I had to keep on texting and calling the agent because they promised to install it within 7 days. So far, I’ve got no problem with the connection, it’s good. But it’s been a month and 3 days now since the installation and I still haven’t got my bill. I tried calling their customer service but they’re not very helpful. I wonder if they charge you another fee for paying your bill late. I don’t know where to pay either, their website doesn’t show much info’n.

  39. ROMS says:

For months now araw araw intermittent ang internet ko. Almost every hour nag kakaroon ng problema. So, ako tatawag sa kanila. Ask sila about modem brand, OS, etc. Maayos naman ako sumagot. Then sasabihin nila open ko daw pingtest. Frustrating na reply ko is, not even google will open up sa browser. I’m receiving “Request Timed Out”. Have an inconsistent ms ranging from 100-500ms. Then 1 time may pumunta. Failure at it’s finest sa service. Pero when it comes to billing 2 weeks before due date tumatawag na sila to remind us. WoW!! Wala ba improvement PLDT DSL?

Mga kababayan. Based sa experience ko, Sa bayantel almost 3 years na akong me dsl (residential 768 kpbs pero lagi syang 1.5mpbs) ok ang service ng bayantel. isang tawag mo lang nandyan na agad yung mga technician. Minsan 4am ako nag report. 12noon nandyan na agad yung mga tech…

Bale dalawa yung connection ko, yung isa business line na naka 2mpbs para sa internet shop namin… ok lahat ng service ng bayantel based on our experience dito sa Payatas Area… Payatas Area na to ah!

    Thanks Kabababayan!

HI, Just want to make a comment. I was previously subscribed to Bayantel for like 2 years at ok naman ang service, I applied thru an agent at mabilis sila magkabit. Connection-wise, I only had 2 incidents na nawalan ng internet sa bahay. Unfortunately, I had to relocate to Mandaluyong where there is no bayantel service so I disconnected my subscription with them. Now im in limbo as to who to subscribe. But my choice would be Globe Wimax. Ill try this one because of their money-back guarantee.

    Comments for SmartBro Prepaid Plug-it

With regards to connection, as with other isp’s, may downtimes pa din at intermittent connections. Most of the time the speed is pretty good ranging from 300kbps to 1.13 mbps. Then there is a time that I downloaded Adobe Premiere Pro, mga 5 to 7 GB yon, less than 6 hours ko lang nadownload. Less than 1 hour lang for 800mb movies. So I can really say that the service is good enough for my budget.

For most ISP’s may you should consider the following:

    1. Determine if your area has a good signal, coverage, or line.
    2. Always read the TERMS and AGREEMENT.
    3. Ask if there is a lock-in period
    4. Determine if there is a bandwidth cap and its maximum capacity allowed.
    5. Search the Internet for reviews about the different ISP’s.
