Britney Spears captivated the imagination and fantasies of the world when she decided to step up her act and break out from her Mickey Mouse childish image. Her provocative performances combined with her girl-next-door appeal made her an instant star, and legions of fans followed her wherever she went. Sadly, the spotlight was too hot for her and she literally broke down in public. What followed was a series of very embarassing moments for her, but nothing would be more embarassing than performing in front of your peers and failing miserably. She’s already lost the respect of her fans, now she’s on the verge of loosing the respect of her peers. The 2007 VMA happened a few days ago and Britney made her comeback performance and I really must say that it was just… too bizarre.

Here’s Britney’s performance 7 years ago at the MTV Awards. I really believe that this was a career defining moment for her and she literally brought the house down. If you compare this to her performance in the recently concluded VMA 2007 for her highly anticipated comeback, you can’t help but be disappointed.

VMA 2000 – Britney

Her performance on the VMA 2007 was dry. She moved slow and you could really tell that she was just lip synching. Doing that is forgivable, especially if she dances as much as the video above. But she really just paraded around like a diva and let her back-up dancers do all the work. I don’t know if it’s because of her personal problems or maybe because she’s wearing a wig. My point is that she wasn’t able to deliver and it may have cost her the respect of her peers in the music industry. Hopefully she can get things together and really mount a serious comeback sometime soon.
