Ateneo De Manila University, one of the premiere colleges in the Philippines, is seriously considering offering a Game Development Course. I was shocked myself when I heard about this but you can’t really ignore the growing global demand for games – and I’m not just talking about the online games that we’re used to here in the Philippines. There are also thousands of titles being released every year for consoles like the PS3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360. How I wish this course was offered when I was still in College a few years ago, hehe.

If ever this does push through, I’m confident that we will see local game development companies come up with really top caliber games! Some snippets from the article after the jump.

THE ATENEO de Manila University here hopes to soon offer a full-blown degree program in game development, school officials have said.

In the past few years, the university has been offering a variety of programming courses and other subjects related to game development. But come 2009, the university hopes to “string them together” into one degree program, said Ma. Mercedes Rodrigo, associate professor and chairperson of the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS) of the university’s School of Science and Engineering.

Rodrigo said Ateneo is working closely with local game development houses, who, in turn, are giving them ideas about the technical and non-technical skills required by the industry.

“We would like to be actively engaged with the industry,” she added.

She, however, noted that the degree will not be limited to computer science students. In fact, for the past semesters, the department has engaged other disciplines to help create a variety of offerings.

DLS-CSB was first in Philippine game development. They had electives offered since 2000. The students also collaborated with the production of Anito.
