It’s Anime Review day! Bleach just released episode 140 last night and I was just able to watch it with subtitles this morning. In the previous episode, we saw the Arancar led by Luppi take on Hitsugaya’s Shinigami group. Grimjaw, the renegade Arancar, bolted from the group and engaged Ichigo. Things turned sour for our heroes though as Luppi decimated Hitsugaya after he released his Zanpaktou. Ichigo also got his ass handed to him by Grimjaw after his Hollow Mask Transformation got used up.

Episode 139 ended with Urahara saving Matsumoto from Luppi. However it looks like Urahara is in trouble because he was attacked by the two other Espada that came with Luppi. That’s where Episode 140 begins. If you don’t want to read spoilers, don’t take the jump.

Initially we thought that Luppi was able to defeat captain Hitsugaya. However just before Luppi takes out Matsumuto (again) in this episode, his tentacles freeze up and we see the young captain rise up from the ashes. Because Luppi wasn’t able to follow through and finish him off, Hitsugaya was able to recover and set-up Luppi for a massive attack. He uses the water in the atmosphere to create multiple ice columns and literally smashes Luppi in one big move. The tentacles holding Matsumoto and the others break and we finally see the true power of a Shinigami captain against and Arancar Espada! Urahara, on the other hand, takes on Yami. The Arancar shows a new technique called “Bara”. It’s a faster but weaker version of Cero. Urahara is able to evade it by using portable gigai and he learns to cancel it using his Zanpaktou later on. This renders Yami useless, and Urahara proceeds to kick his ass.

Now we get to the juicy part. Ichigo was on the verge of beating Grimjaw when his hollow mask broke. After that, it was all Grimjaw. As much as he tried, Ichigo couldn’t get the mask back and he was pounded relentlessly by the former Arancar Espada. Grimjaw uses his sword and impales Ichigo’s hands, and he sets up Ichigo for a point blank Cero. Fortunately for our hero, Rukia comes in to save the day, but this is also futile as Grimjaw is able to shrug off the attack and then focuses on blowing Rukia’s head off instead. BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!

Hirako, the Vaizard that recruited Ichigo, steps in and joins the fight. In this episode, we see the true power of the Vaizard as Hirako easily takes on Grimjaw. The Vaizard does his Hollow Transformation and unleashes a powerful Cero attack that looks much more powerful compared to the Cero of the Arancar Espada. Grimjaw barely survives the attack.

The episode ends with Ulquiora appearing and telling Grimjaw that the mission was completed. Negacion beams come from Hueco Mundo, saving Yami, Luppi, and the other Arancar. The true mission of the Arancar is kinda obvious by now, and that was for them to distract the Shinigami enough until Ulquiorra could kidnap Inoue. Take note that we still have yet to see Yami and Grimjaw release their Zanpaktou. Until that happens, we can’t say how truly powerful those two are. That’s it for Anime Review Bleach 140.
